bored bored BORED.
it's time for me to make a list. this time, it's going to be called "the top five lyrics of all time". i'll try really hard not to make this all the killers. it'll be a hard feat. these are in no particular order. just as they come to mind.
1) Leave The Bourbon On The Shelf by the Killers
Leave the bourbon on the shelf
and I'll drink it by myself.
And I never liked your hair or those people that you lie with
but I'm not satisfied
until I hold you tight.
And I love you endlessly,
darling don't you see I can't be satisfied
until I hold you tight.
That's power right there. I think the way Flowers sings it really makes it gold.
I don't like your hair and I hate your friends, and I will pick out all the stupid petty things I hate about you just for some cover up. In all reality, I'm a liar. And I love you.
See? Power. And how many times have you seen that happen in real life? Brandon's capacity for songwriting is what it is because he can connect with mundane things and make them absolutely beautiful.
2) How Soon Is Now? by the Smiths
You shut your mouth,
how can you say I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does.
Wow. How Morrissey did these things is completely over my head. This might be one of the best songs ever written in general. There are so many lyrics I could choose from How Soon Is Now? that are completely gorgeous. There's anger in those lines. There's desperation. There's hope. It's all there. ILU Morrissey. So much that I'm wearing a shirt with your face on it right now.
3) NYC by Interpol
I had seven faces
Thought I knew which one to wear
But I'm sick of spending these lonely nights
Training myself not to care
The subway is a porno
Pavements they are a mess
I know you've supported me for a long time
Somehow I'm not impressed.
Paul Banks is not the best lyricist in the world. Geeze, he's more nonsensical than anything. On their first album, Turn On The Bright Lights, the lyrics were nearly cringe worthy. Roland, for example. (my best friend's a butcher/he has sixteen knives/he carries them all over the town at least he tries/oh look it stopped snowing) Yeah. WTF? It surprises me that NYC even came off that album. Those lyrics are painfully profound. I connect. I connect to a really deep level. Especially lines three and four. Good job, Banks.
4) True Love Way by Kings of Leon
I want in like a substitute
I’ve been working awful hard for you
But you don’t say, you just hold your breath
So I can’t touch what I haven’t yet
She’s a cold one and it hurts me so
It's a dark path and a heck of a toll
She could kill me just like she did before.
Ouch. Those lines are a stab through the heart. I want to be your anything, so much that I'll take second place. And I'm waiting. And you leave me waiting. And I know it'll end in ruin all over again, but I'm willing to have that destruction take rein. That's my personal interpretation. Song interpreting is my thing.
It's like the southern rock version of U2's With Or Without You. And I love that song as well. That probably explains why this is my favourite KOL song. Really, if there's any song on this list...download this one. It's gorgeous.
5) Augustine by Patrick Wolf
Does it mean that I can never change my ways?
And that's why, love, you shouldn't stay
Still you will and love me
Like a mother or a maid bringing you down, down
Down on your brazen knees
Watering the worms and the weeds
Thinking, why does love leave me so damn cold?
Now I'm getting old
And is this what it should be?
Well, is it?
I cannot describe the way I feel about this song. I know it's a song that's very personal for Patrick, and it's also very personal for me. Patrick captures love in this song. True, honest, deep love. There's hurt and pain, destruction...but still love. I can't describe it. The song's also put in a very romanticized setting: the quaint cottage. Simplicity is what love feeds off of. Nothingness makes love. There needs to be nothing there for it to happen.
I could go on for ages. But Augustine...yeah. Download that one too. :D
I might continue this list later. Please tell me what your favourite lines are. PLEASE. I need new music to download anyhow.
