The show at the Avalon yesterday was amazing. The ride up there, however, was fraught with misfortune (i.e. mass confusion at Taco Bell, getting lost, etc.). Despite all that, I arrived in time to get a fairly decent place to stand. If I could have been about five inches taller I could have seen everything perfectly. After what felt like a million hours of waiting, the Decemberists came out in all their glory.
The set-list is sort of in order, but I probably left something out:
The Infanta
Los Angeles, I'm Yours
The Sporting Life
The Soldiering Life
We Both Go Down Together
From My Own True Love (which they screwed up adorably)
The Bagman's Gambit
Song for Myla Goldberg
Wuthering Heights
Sixteen Military Wives
The Legionnaire's Lament
Engine Driver (even sexier live)
On the Bus Mall
The Chimbley Sweep (I loved the instrument switches)
Encore:
Eli the Barrow Boy
Mariner's Revenge Song ("Scream like you're being swallowed by a whale!")
But the fun didn't stop there... I got an autograph and a picture with Jenny (!!) who is the sweetest woman ever. I tried to wait inside in the hopes that more of the band would come out, but the evil security guard insisted that I leave so that he could "clear the area". So I wandered outside in search of the infamous trailer hoping that I could bribe some roadie to get me backstage. All I had for bribery were some Euros and plastic pirate figurines. I ended up getting soaked as a sailor and decided to go find my family and the car. My aunt circled the block and as we drove past the place I saw Colin standing against a wall smoking!!!! My heart stopped. I climbed over my sister, struggled with the damn locked door, and ran as fast as I could to him, with my aunt trailing behind with the camera. I asked him to sign my Let It Be book and I gave him the note and drawing that poor Specs made for them. He even said that my mini Sharpie was cute. Colin smiled the whole time and was so unbelievably adorable and sweet, I nearly swooned. Somehow I managed not to act like a complete fangirl (even though Colin has that effect on me) and actually strung together several coherent sentences. Then he took a picture with me, hugged me (!!!! swoon), and told me to stay warm. As soon as I figure out how to post pictures, I'll post my two gems.
Sorry for the ridiculously long entry, but this was by far the best night of my life. It's a damn shame that Specs and Chelsea couldn't go.
