Why do we have religion? It's a simple question, there should be a simple answer. And there you have it. A simple answer. That's why we have religion, for simple answers. Infinity is an unimaginable quantity, but the infinity of existence is completely and utterly mindblowing. To be thrust into a world and not be able to understand its ins and outs, it's disorienting. We have all these questions, and so little time in which to get answers. Unfortunately, science does not have all the answers. Only one school of thought does. Religion. Why are we born? Why do we die? Why is there a Sun? Name your question and get an answer. I guess that's part of the problem with the world, we've been fed random answers for an eternity now.
Most people, even atheists, believe that we need religion to keep society in check. To provide a stable platform on which to weigh right and wrong, that the only thing that stops us from doing wrong is religion. My views tend to differ. The thing that stops us is consequence, from law, law is built social norm... and here is where my views differ. Social norm is not built upon religion. Religion does not give us the power to see right from wrong, it only takes credit for doing so, among other things. Basic wisdom comes from instinct. We are after all, animals, if only social animals. And these basic social norms and wisdom can be seen in many animal societies. They do not have religion, they have instinct, inborne and taught. But, in our society, a few men control these social norms, in the name of religion. We suffer at their hands, because we have surrendered our own wisdom to these men... long ago.
In other news, it pains me to see these people that commit suicide... in such mundane ways. Hanging, OD, slitting, posion... such silent, dull methods. If I would ever kill myself, it would be the full stop that my life deserves. Not a footnote, but a supernova... and I wouldn't mind pulling a couple of deserving souls in with me. It wouldn't be tough, there'd be no nagging conscience and regret to worry about.
