The tide is merciless as we rush forward to do battle with the small cadre of living dead that had surrounded Faith, Michael, and myself. I instantly go from Connor-mode to Destroyer-mode. My mind disconnects itself as my body becomes a living weapon ( Read more... )

As this Samantha woman gets rocked back into axe boy's arms, I look out over the crowd that was amassing. We were doing a good job of keeping them at bay, but for how long?

There were just too many. The soldiers were firing, the Slayer was kicking ass, and the other two were hacking away, but...how do you stop the tide?

We weren't going to beat them all. Not now. We weren't prepared. What we needed was enough of a distraction to get them out of here. But what?

I take time surveying the scene, trying to avoid being grabbed by wandering dead hands while I stand on the hood of the car. Michael is crouched beside me, and I have yet to acknowledge his comment from earlier, but I'm suddenly all business.

I do the bit I did back in the street for Michael, trying to sense out the area. See what I could. There was really nothing though, as the chaos was already all around me.

There was a scent of blood in the air, a familiar smell...one that I felt like I should recognize, and for a moment my eyes are drawn up to the window of an abandoned hotel that sits beyond the mass of battle.

I shake my head and bring my attention back to what was in front of me. There was too much, and I must've just been confused. There was enough blood in the air to confuse a vampire, I shouldn't be different.

But there is nothing. Just the usual appearance of a post-apocalyptic scene. Some trash cans, some bodies...an over turned car.

How was that going to help?

Wait.

I look back at the overturned car. Its underside was facing me. My eyes narrow on the exposed gas tank.

Bingo.

I grab my knife, flip the point up in my hand and throw as hard as possible.

As the knife connects with the metal it pierces a hole in the tank, and a slow leak of liquid spills onto the street.

I turn to Michael.

"Get in the jeep, and duck."

I turn on my heel and seek someone else out. I see him.

"Hey! Chainsaw boy! Can I get a spark?"

"Hey! Chainsaw boy! Can I get a spark?"

I am just slicing through some evil ugly's face when I hear that, and turn. It's the kid on the roof of the car. Mister Acrobat himself. What was he ranting and raving about?

Spark? What the hell?

Then I see him motioning over across the street, and my attention shifts.

At first I don't see what he's pointing at, but when there is an updraft of wind and between the smell of decay I catch a hint of gasoline, my eyes zero in.

The gas tank.

I look to my left and see the Kid with the military chick. Beyond them is the ass kicking woman who was here when we arrived and little Miss Vampire thing.

I look to my right and there's plenty of zombies.

"Hey everybody...fall back. We're about to rock this town."

I run a mad swing through the zombie horde, moving as fast as I can, avoiding scratching claws and biting teeth.

As I emerge nearer the car, I kick my feet out and slide my body to the ground.

Skidding across the pavement, I slide near my goal.

A manhole cover.

With my good hand (ha), I pry it up. It's heavy, and I'm surprised I get it, but maybe I'm running on pure adrenaline.

I tuck the manhole cover under my armpit and run to a small puddle of gasoline that has amassed a few feet from the car. I set the edge of the manhole cover in it, and stand.

I raise the chainsaw over my head, and grimace.

I slam my the chainsaw against the edge of the metal.

CLANG

"Come on."

Again.

CLANG

"COME on."

CLANG

"Come...the...fuck...on!"

CLANG

Suddenly it hits. The metal strikes the right way and a flash. A spark leaps forward. It catches the puddle, and ignites.

The flame starts trailing back toward the car.

Oh shit.

I turn and run back toward the jeep as fast as I can.

"Drive sons of bitches, drive!"

I don't want to say our efforts were pointless...but I can sure as hell think it.

No matter how many of the sons of bitches we knocked down they just kept coming. It felt like for every one i knocked down, two more would step up and take its place. Still, I kept on, managing to keep my footing on the asphalt which was now slick with blood and...well, I don't know the technical name, so I'll stick with 'brain juice'. These things smelled to high heaven when they were in one piece and being torn open just made it worse.

I heard an order being given, but it wasn't from miss i'm-in-charge-now. While I was in a momentary clear I glanced in his direction as he took out some frustration on a manhole grate. Watching sparks fly and then a flame start up I caught notice of the car...and the direction the flames were headed.

Crap...

I gave one final zombie the barrel of my gun through the eye then ran for one of the jeeps already in motion and hopped on.

I don't catch on to the plan till I see the fire. Great. Those two team up, we're bound to get someone killed. Ash screams at the guys who've already got on the truck, and a few stragglers look at me and blink. Most of them couldn't piss without being given the order to do so. I don't waste any time standing there and start running toward the jeep.

"you heard him! RETREAT!" I've aparently translated chainsaw man's suggestion into thier language because they all drop what they're doing and start running for the jeep. I pile on with Xander and notice immedeatley that things are much more cramped. The jeep jerks into motion and I grab the nearest person to keep them from falling off.

Great, I'm doing the mom-arm now. Next thing I know I'm going to be tucking them in.

Sam fell into me but somehow magically I caught her and she thanked me. Man, she was beautiful.

But there wasn't alot of time for that because Conner starts to scream things and then Ash starts to and soon I'm diving into the jeep, Sam jumping into me, not on because we're too packed in for on or next to...and we motor.

At that moment I have no idea who is driving but it doesn't matter because we are driving away from the explosion.

Her arm flies over me to hold me down as our car careens away through the streets. I look back to see alot of flames and corpses on fire and flaming corpses...and then like a candle in the wind...or a candle lit with kerosene a giant fireball just shot up a bit because of the converging flames. "Wow." I say as I look over to Sam.

I'm a little slow to catch onto the whole escape plan. I kinda get in a groove when I'm fighting and the whole survival instinct takes precedence over, y'know, unimportant shit like hearing.

Once the yelling gets through to me, I'm right with everyone else in the dash for the cars. One of the zombies gets in my way and I almost take a nosedive, but I've got enough momentum to overpower it. One flying leap later, I'm sardined into the back of a Jeep with a whole bunch of people I barely recognize...and Xander.

He and one of the unfamiliar girls are sitting right in front of me and I can see that puppy-dog look starting in his eyes as he looks at her. So what do I do? Interrupt, naturally. It hasn't been THAT long since he and I saved the world together.

Slapping my hand down on his shoulder, I lean forward in order to be heard over the still-chaotic stuff around us.

"Xan-man! Didn't really get to say hi earlier. What the hell are you doing in Michigan?"

I've never in my life experienced such chaos in one spot before. Sure, I'd HEARD about it...that little stunt with the town of Sunnydale is a humdinger and a half, not to mention what's left of it.
But all this was insane...and the scary thing was...I liked it. The adrenaline rush like never before, the constant rush of undead coming at you, the pretty flicker of the flames.
Wait, what?!

Note to self: Kaboom is not a good enough word.

Everyone was piling onto vehicles and storming out of there, myself, I was kinda hanging on the side of the door because everyone else was playing sardines.
I looked round for a familiar face and found Connors and smiled at him.

"Maybe on our next date we should stay inside", I laughed, "party nights of the undead are a bit much to handle"

No shit sherlock.

(Here's my 'I'm alive' reply, lol)

I realize the person I kept from teetering off the edge of the jeep was Xander and he looks at me like I was the one who started the fire theatrics, so I shrug a little in his direction and bring my arm back into my own personal space. Before I can think of something witty to say, a hundred and so pounds of slayer barrels in on us and I raise an eyebrow as she screams over the roar of the motor of the jeep.

We get a comfortable distance away from the inferno and I look over my shoulder and do a head count while Xander chats it up with the Faith, whom I knew on sight. That's the second slayer he knows.

The roar of the fire behind us is unbelievable, but as the jeep puts a further distance between our merry band of heroes and the zombie roast, it kind of is a spectacular sight.

I watch as it takes the front off a hotel, yet the building remains standing.

Hopefully no one was in there.

After gazing at the inferno for a few, I angle myself to look forward in the cramped jeep. Looks like we got everyone out, and apparently were heading back to the Iniaitive's HQ.

Well, it's a good thing I'm not opposed to teamwork, cause it looks like we just joined the family.
