Trina Echolls is not much of an actress (and enough of a realist to know it, if not to, you know, actually admit it out loud). But she’s a pro at acting like Trina Echolls the persona. (She has less of a handle on Trina Echolls the person ( Read more... )

The plane touched down at McCarran International Airport just after 5 a.m.

Logan had taken a the first available red-eye out of LAX mostly because he was afraid he'd miss Trina's 'marriage' altogether. She was probably already working on an anullment, and he couldn't stand to miss the opportunity to rib her - and to possibly take another swipe at Chad. It was a remote possibility, but one he woudl relish.

An even remoter possibility was that Trina might be glad to see him. After all, last night's phone call was the first time he'd spoken to her since the funeral, and it hadn't been what one would call conducive to mending their relationship ( ... )

It's the sixth inning, and the Cardinals are down by three; the fans roar in disappointment as the man at bat misses another swing, Chad along with them.

It takes him a few moments, therefore, to hear the knocking; once he does, he swings himself hastily out of the chair and goes to pull the door open, calling out as he goes.

"Trina, coffee's -"

Logan grins and shoves the tray at him. "Here," he finishes. "Hi, bro. How's it hanging?"

Chad catches the tray automatically, still staring.

It takes a moment for him to rally, but rally he does, putting on a bright smile.

It could have been worse, he's thinking. It could have been the paparazzi.

(Little does Chad know.)

"Good to see you, kid - uh, do you want to come in?"

"Thanks," Logan says, pushing past Chad. Probably jogging the tray, too. "It's not so bad to see you, either. How's my darling sister handling all the crazy? I'm sure you're used to it by now, or I'd ask."

"Trina's doing fine," Chad says - still smiling, though it's already a bit ragged around the edges - and sets the tray down on a table.

Behind him, another Cardinal strikes out, and the inning changes.

"She's on the phone now, but she'll be off any minute, I'm sure."

"God," Logan says, noticing the TV. "I can't believe you're watching this crap. The Cards suck ass this year, they really do."

He flops down on the couch and watches anyway. Because otherwise, he'd have to talk to Chad. And that seems like a bad idea.

By a mighty expense of effort, Chad resists the temptation to tell him to switch to channel 4, which by this time should be about halfway through the Tinseltown Diaries Echolls family episode.

"It does to pass the time until the coffee comes or the phone rings," he says instead, his tone determinedly friendly, and picks up a coffee mug.

Logan's taken his spot, of course.

Chad is clearly a stronger man than Logan. He wouldn't resist. Wouldn't even try.

"Yeah," Logan says. "Speaking of, how many phone calls a second are you guys getting? Because it seems pretty quiet in here right now. Surprising, giving the number of reporters outside."

Chad settles for taking the armchair off to one side.

"Oh, I've switched my phone off; the only one I've got is the number that only my agent and my grandmother have."

Chad's grandmother is half-blind, and is therefore probably the only person in America who hasn't heard about her grandson's marriage yet.

With sudden worry: "How many reporters are there out there? You didn't give them our room number, did you?"

Logan would grant Chad points for brains, but then he had to ask that question.

"Hell no," he says, offended. "I only got it by showing my driver's license to a kitchen wench. And she's probably going to sell her story as soon as she possibly can, so be prepared for a new story before the next news cycle even starts."

Kid's way too pleased with himself by that. Adding fodder to the ravening gossip journalists!

"Underaged Echolls Visiting Vegas, Drops In on Sister and Swain," Chad says, with another sigh.

"Well, it could be worse."

"Yeah," Logan says, smirking. "It could include 'love nest' somewhere in the headline. And I could have brought Dick Casablancas, which would have made life a lot worse for everyone. On many levels."

Logan's figuring Chad knows about the Casablancas family woes, but it's possible he's missed it, what with his own woes.

Chad gives Logan a startled look. There's only one reason he can think of that Logan bringing a friend with him to Vegas would make news.

(Chad keeps abreast of entertainment news; murder trials he tends to overlook.)

"I guess," he agrees, "if you'd booked a weekend getaway with your friend Dick, it would probably have distracted the reporters from me and your sister."

"Yes," Logan says drily. "Except not in the sense you meant. Dick's little brother killed himself after admitting to murdering like, 15 people. He's kind of notorious on CNN. Not so much on VH-1, though, which maybe explains why you missed it."

". . . oh," says Chad.

Which is really all that you can say to that sort of thing, when you're a Sensitive Emo Type.
