*pokes* Um, Metallica are that band who every says are the "fathers of thrash metal", and shockingly, yes, they are. They were rated as a fucking fantastic thrash metal band, and yes, they are a fucking fantastic thrash metal band. I have this theory that you just don't like thrash metal. That don't mean 'tallica are over-rated :P
But like them or not, that doesnt change the fact that they practically founded a genre. Thus it surely must be hard to call them over-rated in that genre. Its like say that "Death" are a shit Death metal band. Or that Led Zepplin were an overrated rock&roll band.
I know they practically founded a genre. but I think some of their songs are shit, because I don't like them. I find people who think that every song by a band is great purely because it's by that band to be odd, and that's where I think some bands get the over-rated thing with me.
Metallica was the first thing that came to my mind, and not a cue for you to dispute my music taste.
in thier genre they're loved, for, as dave says, founding a genre. but they're considered by many too many greebos (i haven't used that word in about 2 years!) to be the godfathers of rock period. they are not.
the same goes for nirvana. they defined grunge (NOT INVENTED IT), but they did not define rock music by any means.
I'm not disputing anyone's music taste. Your welcome to like or dislike whatever you want. Heck, I havent listened to 'tallica in fricking months, and really dont like them that much anymore. I am merely saying that you cannot call a band over-rated just because you personally do not like them, whereas it is actual fact that they are the patriachs of there genre. I'm bored of this conversation now.
Led Zeppelin were an over-rated rock and roll band. They did some interesting things sometimes, but stadium rock is not anything to be proud about. And genres aren/t worth a penny except to lazy music journalists who/d rather have a series of boxes into which they can place something. They are self-destructive, and to boast of creating one is to encourage a lack of creativity on everyone/s account within what we must unenthusiastically and somewhat morbidly term 'the industry'. Is it a coincidence the the dullest and most uninspiring bands are those which fit most snugly into one of these coffins, to be emblazoned with the words 'punk', 'metal' or god forbid, 'indie'?
