at lunch, went to my dad's shop to check out his computer. he called a few days ago and said that something kept popping up, alerting them to viruses, and wouldnt let them do anything.

of course, it turns out the thing alerting them to all of the viruses on their computer is a virus (Antivirus2008). my dad asked 'why do they do this? just to say 'ha-ha, got you?' i pointed out they were trying to sell him the fix, like saying 'i gave you AIDS, the cure is $24.99 a month.'

i managed to get spybot downloaded, just for a start. i told my dad and his partner that i had a bad virus a few years ago, and took me about two weeks and a lot of self-education to get rid of it. i ended up taking their computer with me.

so, here's my battle plan. 1) hit symantec, they have a download fix specific to Antivirus2008. 2) run spybot, hijackthis and BHOdemon in safe mode 3) sick killbot on the registry if i can find the offending root.

this is what worked for me last time, and it certainly wont take me 2 weeks this time, but im hitting up my smart friends. any other ideas?

i just forsee more problems because there are some quirky symptoms: the 'all programs' and 'my computer' buttons are gone from their start menu, they swore they had actual antivirus software installed, but its not on the add/remove program list, etc.

oh, step 4) buy norton.
