I used to be part of those forum fandoms, and from what I remember, it was actually fun. But then again, this happened at least 5 years ago.
I just accidentally stumbled onto TWOP, and goddamn it do I hate it there. Being opinionated is one thing, but to bash a show/actor over the head? Not cool. Timothy Hutton aged perfectly fine, bitch.
As everyone on my f-list knows (or should know by now) that I am insanely in love with Leverage right now. I think it's a cleverly written show that not only is entertaining, but actually really well done (shitty CGI aside, but that's not the point). One thing I can't stand is how people on TWOP keep on comparing it to Hustle. Now I haven't seen Hustle, but I do know that it has con artists as the main characters. Here's a Leverage/Hustle list I found on Baidu (a Chinese forum) that I roughly translated:
Hustle steals by taking advantage of your greed.
Leverage steals because you pissed them off.
Hustle has Michael Stone as the leader of a group of con artists.
Leverage has Nathan Ford as the mastermind, who assigns certain jobs to his team of professional criminals.
The beauty of Hustle is that even till the end, you still won't know you got screwed over.
The beauty of Leverage is that they take everything from you right in front of your eyes, and there's nothing you can do about it.
The characters of Hustle are like sly foxes in suits.
The characters of Leverage resemble the modern day Robin Hood.
What makes Hustle appealing is their extreme way of thinking and concise plans.
What makes Leverage appealing is how they try to make all the wrongs right.
Both shows actually show how each country thinks, the British like to think of elaborate and detailed plans, while Americans like to take the chance and initiate.
Simply put, the "British will make the thickest pants to cover theirs asses. Americans prefer to just grab a towel on their running way" (as the OP put it originally).
I can only speak for Leverage, since I'm up to date with this show-- this OP pretty much nailed Leverage on the head. I don't know if the parts about Hustle are correct or not, but one thing is certain, these two shows are nothing alike. Just because they both have the whole con/heist theme to them does not make them the same show. Some people even said that Leverage copied Hustle. WTF. Have you people even WATCHED the show?
People are quick to judge on forums too, and this doesn't only apply to Leverage, but to other shows (like House) as well. And the wank there seems to get INCREDIBLY ugly. I mean the wank I've seen over here on LJ aren't by any means juvenile, so imagine how horrendous the wank is over in those forums.
It honestly feels like no one is watching Leverage and the fandom is so small I want to cry (blame House and BBT for making me used to being part of a MF HUGE fandom). We all know, high ratings = more money for the production crew. It hurts to hear that they can't do half of the brilliant things they have planned in their script because they don't have the budget for them. People who waste their time on those overrated network shows should really try giving cable shows a chance. So many great shows are being ignored because people would rather be utterly disappointed by their old shows than be entertained by the newer ones.
GO WATCH LEVERAGE, PEOPLE. I BEG OF YOU.
