So yeah, I watched all three episodes of the new Sherlock Holmes adaptation, and it was good. Very very good. In fact it was so good I've decided to post in my dead journal here just to have someplace to frame my amazement into words. And then complain.
The atmosphere in this series is absolutely breathtaking. There's always this sense of motion, of vivid life in Sherlock that I haven't usually seen in television series. It's beautiful to watch. There are literally hundreds of places that go into great depth about how awesome the series is, so I won't go into it here. Suffice to say, as a whole, the episodes flow very well, save for a few jarring bits.
What jarring bits? Okay, I haven't read the original stories for about 15 years, and I haven't watched the Guy Richie movie, but here are the parts that stuck out for me (and not in the good way):
Study in Pink: I picked up on the cabbie right after Sherlock ruled out his American passenger. I seriously doubt Sherlock would forget that there was a cabbie in the cab.
My fanwanky fixit: Sherlock just got hit by a car and it addled him/Sherlock was too busy trying to impress John to think with his upstairs brain/Sherlock was distracted by the boyfriend/girlfriend conversation.
Blind Banker: Sherlock lets John take the blame for the spraypaint and ditches him? WTF?
My fanwanky fixit: Sherlock mistook the other guy for John. Or he forgot he has a partner now. Erm. Not happy about this bit.
Blind Banker: John, the soldier who misses the war, whose hands don't shake when confronted with danger... sweats and yells and generally freaks out when tied to a chair with his girlfriend in danger.
My fanwanky fixit: John's soldier thing only kicks in if Sherlock's in the area. Actually, I think the reason John panics is because he needs to be normal for Sarah. He's trying to convince her that he doesn't usually get tangled up in criminal goings on and he's Perfectly Ordinary. Sarah is his attempt to fit back into civilian life, to be some normal bloke who doesn't miss the war. Normal guys usually don't react well to danger, so John responds the way he subconsciously thinks he should. John Watson is basically an actor, in much the same way Sherlock is. He's Action Man/Personal Slave for Sherlock, a nice harmless man for witnesses/suspects/civilians, and Mr Stoic for everyone else.
Great Game: Bohemian. Woman. Five pips. You can really see the huge flashing arrows going "LOOK AT ME I'M A CANON REFERENCE!!!"
Mycroft's dental appointment. He could speak perfectly well when John was interviewing him. According to Sherlock, Mycroft doesn't text when he can talk. Mycroft texts Sherlock and John because he can't talk. John then shows up to get the facts and Mycroft talks to him. While John is working the case, Mycroft keeps texting him about the plans.
My fanwanky fixit: The woman who wrote on the envelope will show up again. Pips, I dunno. And the talk/text discrepancy?
IT WASN'T MYCROFT TEXTING JOHN.
*dun dun dunnnn.... *
Love the series, love the characters, expect fanwork spasms from me in the future.
