The Daily Rogue.

One strange thing also that I noticed right away while in Canada was the wierd obsession with Paris Hilton. I have been critical of the obession with celebrities in general for a long time now, but the idea that someone outside this country gave two shits about Paris Hilton cause me to trip a brain breaker. Several people I talked too were busy making fun of her crying for her mommy or whatever. "Rich little heiress gets hers." I am happy to say that I don't understand the glee some people take from anyone's misery. It's not like she killed someone or something. It's like Anna Nichole, but different. I guess I never realize quite how deep the lyrics to the TOOL song "Vicarious" really cut into our psyche. Some people in Canada really apparently have nothing better to do than obsess over every news story that CNN says is important. I've heard conservative pundits before say that CNN caters to the international audience, but now I believe it. I guess it is like how I can't figure out why anyone in the USA cares about the goings-on of the British royal family.

I feel like a broken record. I guess this is just another in a long list of things that become a Big Deal where I just shrug and say whatever. A couple of people in Canada gave me Paris updates, I suppose expected some sort of opinionated tirade that they see from pundits on CNN. My opinion is pretty simple, really. If she committed a crime, she ought to serve ought whatever punishment the justice system dictates for that crime. I do think it is sad that often punishment seems to hinge on how much you can spend on lawyers. I wonder, though, if that is just as much skewed public perception as anything. The litany of the Inquisitor Skeptic is "show me the data." Perception can often not reflect reality.

We have a nasty habit of putting people on pedestals for no apparent other reason than to see them fall. We do take a kind of populist, savage glee in tearing people down. I think some celebrities are taken about by the viciousness of the attacks sometimes.

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor
It happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son"
"She used the poison in his tea
[and / he] kissed [him / her] goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies

Don't look me at like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother, holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky cryin,
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Will write us the story so
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain fallin' down
[Drown on grave and ground / ?? ]

Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the
[transmittal / transmitter]
Sing to the death rattle

La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie (x4)

Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men.
But pull your head on out
[Your head please / ??] and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been ...

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.
