Help Me Help You Is Off The Air

I'm back in the Help Me Help You office today after 3 weeks of "vacation" (the unpaid variety). We've been waiting to hear from the network about the fate of our show. ABC had already ordered 13 episodes. Ever since the day we premiered in late-September, our hope was that ABC would order the additional nine episodes to finish out a full, 22 episode season. I was told that the earliest we may hear about that decision would be October 4th. This was later pushed to October 11th, then again to November 3rd. Then possibly December 6th. Mind you, we're all waiting to hear so we can buy plane tickets, plan our holidays, etc. Due to a variety of contract and scheduling concerns, the absolute latest they could wait until was December 13th.

And so, late on the 13th (last night), word came in: ABC has decided to not purchase additional episodes.

While I thought the show was funny, it's hard to argue with the numbers. Once we were paired with Big Day (another shining star on ABC's Tuesday night lineup), we regularly came in last for our time slot. Even Univision may have done better than us one of those nights.

So, that's that. I'm back at work to help "wrap" the office. Boxing it all up and moving the leftovers to storage should take a week or so. Then, I will wake up Christmas morning, unemployed, but satisfied with the knowledge that I successfully rode out my first crazy roller coaster ride of a full television series.

So you can have an idea about how these kinds of developments are reported in the trades, here's a snip from this morning's Cynopsis:Checking through the primetime schedules during the upcoming week, we find Help Me Help You needed more help than ABC could give it, and the result is the show has been pulled from next Tuesday's night lineup. Next week, ABC will air back to back episodes of Big Day from 9-10p, which hasn't exactly been a big boon for the network either, but perhaps worth a shot double booking. As for the Danson sitcom, there is no official word the show has been canceled, but there's no word when it will be back either.
I'm thinking that word will never come.
