The rain pattered lightly against the windows of the solarium, providing a soothing background noise to the quiet conversation that filled the room. Despite the weather, it was a pleasant day-- one for reflection and discussion, not for arguments.
Unfortunately, there were a couple people in Sunnyside Retirement Home that hadn't gotten the memo.
"Good morning, Mr. Kuroba," a nurse said cheerfully as an elderly man rolled by her in his wheelchair. "Oh, and happy birthday!"
"Thanks!" Despite his old age, Kaito Kuroba still sounded like a teenager when he talked. "Eighty down-- here's to eighty more, right?" He flashed the younger woman an almost flirtatious grin, then rolled on.
His target was seated by the window, her walker next to her chair (he'd completely lost the use of his legs before she'd even started to need a cane, much to his consternation). "Heyyyy, Zuly-chan!" he greeted Azula. "How're things? Oops, sorry." He scooted closer, then spoke louder. "HOW'RE THINGS?"
He might have had worse legs than she did, but he would never stop reminding her of his superior hearing.
"I have my hearing aid in," she grumbled, leaning away from him. "Stop acting like an idiot."
"Just making sure!" Kaito said cheerfully. "I wouldn't want you to miss any part of this year's important memory test!"
Azula groaned. "You can't be serious. You've been doing this every year on your birthday since we both landed in this place together; aren't you tired of it yet?"
Kaito wheeled around in front of her and looked her dead in the eye. "I take it very seriously, Zuly-chan. When you start going senile, I want to be the first to know it."
"Why, so you can mock me for it?"
"Exactly. Now, first question! Where were you born?"
Azula seriously considered not answering. This was ridiculous; she had no reason to humor him. But she knew from experience that if she didn't, he'd badger and badger until she either gave in, or lost her temper-- and she didn't feel like spending a week in the mental health ward the way she had the year he'd turned seventy-two.
With a sharp sigh, she decided to give in. Again.
"The Fire Nation Capital. In the palace."
"Very good! Now..." Kaito thought for a moment. "When did you first find the community?"
"The year I was fourteen. It was May."
"Also good! You're passing with flying colors so far, Zuly-chan." His expression turned smug, which meant that Azula knew what was coming next-- there was only one question he always asked, and she always responded to it in the same way. "Now, this one might be kind of hard, so it's okay if you don't know the answer right away. But remember when you had an argument with Hakuba, and you kidnapped--"
"-- Arrested."
Dramatic silence.
"I think you're remembering your facts wrong," Kaito finally said with a shrug. "Just like every other year! You definitely kidnapped him."
"And just like every other year, I think you're forgetting that he compromised Fire Nation national security. I had no choice but to arrest--"
"-- You mean kidnap?"
"I mean arrest. And really, as long as we're on the subject of mental health, can you explain to me why you administer this little 'test' every year for the sole purpose of bringing that age-old argument up again?"
"Simple." Kaito grinned. "Sixty years later and it's still just as fun to annoy you."
And then he rolled away.
