It's an intermission. The lawyer takes a break to make Plan D, the Judge breaks for lunch, the audience breaks for the exit and refills, and the detective breaks because he forgot something in his car. Ema stays in her seat, though, as people pass her by on the balcony, watching a professional in action. With notes, if necessary. He's always the last person to leave the courtroom, she's noticed, taking a few extra minutes to pack up his satchel and look around the courtroom like he owns the place. She's starting to think that maybe he does. Not physically, okay, that'd take a lot of work, but in a metaphorical sense. He certainly acts the part. And his Objections sound so much better than the attorney's, like they have more meaning, and sure, maybe his suit is the wrong color maroon, but he wears it so much better than the attorney.
One day, she's going to be his assistant. She's decided. She's going to gather evidence for him, test surfaces the world over with luminol, and she won't forget things in her car. She can't do that last one because she doesn't have a car, but that's a minor detail. And she will do her job so well, investigate things so scientifically, that one day he'll say thank you. In that voice of his, that she's decided sounds simmerous. Maybe that's not a word, but it doesn't matter, because maybe he defies normal descriptions. He seems to defy a lot of things. And he's so confident, and assured, and one day. One day she's going to work with him, and she's going to work so well that he'll notice. And everything will go fuzzy, like she's looking through a slightly warped microscope. And time will stand still, even though the clock should be ticking. And there will be pink bubbles everywhere, because there's always pink bubbles when this sort of thing happens. There might even be sparkles involved, although she doesn't think he's the type to sparkle anywhere. And he'll--
"Ema? Court's in recess now," Lana's voice says from somewhere to her right. Ema looks up and sees her sister, smiling slightly and almost shaking her head. Not like she's saying "no", though, more like that she's had to repeat the same phrase about ten times before it got through. Ema knows that look fairly well by now. So, she isn't shocked or upset or anything, and quickly moves to follow her out the door. She doesn't put her notepad away, because Lana taught her that a good investigator's always ready to take notes.
"Do I get to meet some of your co-workers today?" Ema asks. She's wanted to meet them for a long time, ever since Lana started talking about what she did for work. She always knew her sister was a detective, but it wasn't until recently that she knew how big of a job it was.
"Of course," Lana says as they walked down the stairs. "We're going to have to hurry, though. Court's almost back in session."
By the end of the day, Ema learns that the prosecutor's name is Mr. Edgeworth. This comes in very handy when she starts drawing hearts around his name the next time she takes notes during court.
