Our plan is to extend an invitation to everyone who signs up as a fanwork creator, beta, or cheerleader when that time comes around. We're absolutely happy to have everyone watch the community to watch for announcements or see the finished products, but we're keeping the challenge-specific posts locked for people who do sign up, and rather than just approving people beforehand, we'll be sending out invites when we confirm sign-ups. We know that not everyone who applies to join the community is going to sign up as a participant, and not everyone who signs up will remember to join. That's why we have that policy in place. This is the first time this particular big bang has been run, but I've used the same policy in other big bangs that I've run, and have participated in still others that are run the same way. It has always worked out well in those bangs, so we chose to do it here, too.
I'm sorry if you feel that this particular challenge isn't for you, be it because of this policy or the time table. We'll be happy to have you if you decide to sign up.
However, if they can't sign up before that time comes around, how are you going to extend an invitation to them? It would be easier just to sit on the requests and approve them on the specific time you're waiting for, when the time comes. Perhaps I've overlooked it, but I've not seen a place to sign up that doesn't involve joining...which is why I sent the request.
In any case, my suggestion is something you could consider since many of us who do this professionally get in 'zones' when we're working on a timetable. It doesn't mean at all that you have to approve anyone before the time you'd like, but instead it means that creative types can send their request and not chance losing the window.
Joining the community now isn't the same as signing up. Sign-ups aren't open yet, and won't be until next Wednesday. Sign-ups will be an open post on the community where you state your intent to participate. Anyone is welcome to watch the community, and anyone who does will be able to tell the moment that the sign-ups go live. Joining now wouldn't get you advance notice, and letting the requests sit doesn't usually do anything but make people wonder if their request has been seen by the mods. That's why we sent out a note when we rejected the membership requests - everyone involved knows what the score is, that way.
The most recent post in the community shows our timetable - the sign-up posts will be set up and opened on 30 May. At that point, anyone who is watching the community will be able to see the posts - they'll be put up on that day, not just unlocked, so they'll show up on friends lists. At that point, anyone who signs up on one of the lists will get an invite from one of the mods - one of the things the mods can do from the back end of any community is invite people to join.
We know all about time constraints - even people who aren't professional creators can get into that 'zone' you're talking about, no matter their line of work. Watching the community now will increase your chances of remembering, as we'll be posting reminders that will show up on the friends list of anyone watching the community, and will be posting the sign-ups directly to the comm on the date we set in the schedule. I'm very sorry if you feel that the way we're doing it marginalizes creators in any way, but as I've said, I've successfully used this format before, and we're going to be keeping it for the time being.
