Filled - Dreams, Like Far Off Memories

Hope this is what you were looking for.
Clark's always been … alone isn't the right word, because there's always been someone meddling in his life, but he's never been … together with anyone.
He's always been single. Just him. Just plain old Clark.
Even Superman's never had a formal partner. Kara and Kon may be 'Super' as well, but they've never been his and he's never been theirs.
He's always been single and that thought kind of terrifies him.
Or rather, the implications it has on the missing pieces of his life terrify him.
He wakes up in the morning, warm and energized by the sun, and rolls over in his bed. His arms reach and clutch at air, searching for something and waking him up with a frantic jolt when it's not there.
Clark, it's our day off. Le'me sleep.
He forgets to make the coffee and is always surprised when there's none in the pot. As he makes a batch, he always wonders how he could have forgotten -
mm, I feel like Superman coffee today. Hot, black, and strong.
-that there's no one else to make it.
It makes him never want to leave the office. His apartment is empty, lonely, and sometimes not even his, because sometimes it feels like it belongs to a stranger. A nice, friendly, happy stranger, but a stranger nonetheless.
At the office, his cubicle is his. It has three walls, a desk, a chair, and a computer that he somehow manages to break every few months. It's neat and organized and the complete opposite of the one on it's other side.
I have a system!
Lois Lane may be the best reporter on the paper, but no one knew quite how she kept everything organized. Even after the switch to computers she had stacks of papers leaning halfway off her desk and crumpled drafts of stories scatter across the floor.
It amused Clark almost as much as Lois when he puttered around behind her picking it all up.
She was also a terrible speller. It was amusing, but when she went for the dictionary under her desk he felt that again something was missing.
Clark, how many 'p's in 'therapist'?
He could never, ever put his finger on what was wrong, and it bothered him every minute. No more so when he caught Lois staring off into space.
Her nails were neatly trimmed and red against her cheek. It made him want to -
brushed her hair out of the way to rest a hand on her shoulder. "Everything okay?"
"Oh!" She started and then turned to smile at him. "Just wool-gathering. Ready for dinner?"
- get her a cup of -
Ma's hot coco, with fresh milk and a stick of cinnamon
- the office's tea to help her relax.
Sometimes he thought it was all about Lois. Everything missing was about her.
She was the one he was almost telling his secret to on a regular basis, when Superman was needed and he's turn to her with an excuse that always seemed unnecessary.
Looks like a job for Superman. I can handle things here.
He thinks that she's the missing piece and he knows, somewhere deep inside, that she's someone he could love.
That he already loves her.
He's Superman and he's Kal-El, but there's still something missing in Clark Kent's mundane, normal life. And he wants to find it.
"Hey, Lois?"
She doesn't look up from her typing, but she never does. "What is it, Kent?"
"Do you … want to go get coffee sometime?"
Would you marry me?
She looks up at him with a smile. "Sure. Today after work?"
He almost fumbles the stack of papers when he nods. "Do you like Fillio's Cafe?"
Do you, ----- , take ----- , to be your lawfully wedded -----?
She's already typing again, paying half attention to him. "Mm-hmm."
I do.
Clark smiles and sits down in his own cubicle. It'll be five hours before Lois even thinks of leaving, and another hour after that before she finally stands up to get her coat. If she takes longer, he can always peer over the edge and reminder her of their date.
I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the-

Ohhhh, this was perfect and so sad, and it fits the tone of Superman #1 very well. It makes perfect sense if things bleed over, how he can't get over her at all and yet (in the canon) can't seem to get up the nerve to approach her either. I'm glad you fixed that! I think my favorite little detail was how sad he is whenever she doesn't ask him how to spell something...poor Clark!

Beautiful. I really wish this wasn't anon, because I'd love to read your other fics, writernon. (You did write other fics in this fandom, right?)
It's amazing. Their voices and how everything bleeds together and Lois having a system and Clark honestly fumbling for once, not because he's playing a role, but because he's asking her out... OTP.

I don't have an official account, but if you want to read more of what I wrote, I wrote the 'Flying in Hong Kong' on DCnU Meme, and several on the Tim/Kon Meme. If you'd like to read those, I'd be happy to point out which they are.
