They don't know him, how could they? Batman didn't let the league and his family mingle too much. There had been talk of course. Rumors, half truths and outright lies that were whispered about so much the tales changed with each telling. Maybe Superman knew the truth but he wasn't with them. Perhaps they were quick to rush into a situation they knew nothing about. Barry heard the Red Hood was engaged in a fight and raced to stop it.
Many mocked them for not seeing shades of gray. In this case they didn't even assume there were any. All they saw was a man in a red helmet and body armor that had been labeled a criminal by the law. They jumped to the gun by placing the chaos on him. That was not the case.
But before they could learn that fact things got messy. Hal was a little too arrogant when he grabbed the Red Hood. Boastfully saying that it was an easy feat to capture a thug Batman couldn't get. A sudden lock to the groin caught Hal off guard. In a matter of seconds he was down for the count as their quarry knocked him out.
It should have been a easy matter to contain the Red Hood given their numbers and powers. But nothing was as it seemed. He wasn't alone. Arsenal and Starfire were with him. The element of surprise was on their side but the League was of little interest to them. The trio chased after a woman in black who disappeared into the fire and smoke. They might of escaped as well if not for Hals' aim.
The Red Hood bounced off the dock into the back of a nearby ship before landing hard.
"Ha! I got the basta--!" The loud crack of Hals' jaw stopped them all in their tracks.
Batman loomed over his teammate threateningly before wordlessly stepping over him. Wonder Woman noted the newcomers he had brought with him, the entire Gotham based Batfamily. To the best of her knowledge they never came together like this. While Barry demanded answers she watched Batman as he purposely strolled towards the prone man. There was a hesitation as he took those final steps.
“Three ribs are broken.” Superman informed. His voice was soft and reassuring in a way that would be out of place when speaking of a mere criminal.
There was a tight nod . Black gloves tightened into fists. Another beat passed before Batman knelt down to check for himself. “Don’t touch me.”
The hand drew back as if burned.
“You need medical attention.” It sounded stiff, impersonal.
“Didn’t know you got a MD. since we last met.” He was mocking but it was more than that. A hurt so deep Dianas’ heart ached.
“You’ve done enough damage.” The protective fury coming off of Starfire made more than a few recoil. Gently picking up the Red Hood she glared at Batman daring him to try to take her burden.
“Kori-!” Nightwing started but fire in her gaze stopped him from taking another step.
“No. I will not let any of you harm him further.” Grabbing the archer the princess took off into the sky.
Batman watched them fly off ignoring the questions his teammates were asking him. Diana didn’t need to hear the words. She could see the truth. Nothing hurt more than losing a child.
