It had been an amazing year.
The five year mission had been given to Jim and the Enterprise. Well deserved, most people thought, after word spread about what Jim had done. The Enterprise had been a fairly new ship, but a five year mission required additional time in Spacedock, updates and upgrades and refits - even Sickbay received new equipment,

Leonard could see this just as the two of them left his office, all eyes turning toward the two of them, little smirks, curious glances. "Heading out for the day," he told them. "Hold down the fort for me."
"Yes sir," M'Benga replied, giving Leonard a little wink. "Captain," he added, nodding deferentially toward Jim.
Rolling his eyes, Leonard followed Jim out of the door, and toward the lift. "Did you wanna head toward the galley to get some dinner before we head home?" he asked, waiting for Jim to step onto the lift first. One of a dozen little things he needed to remember, to relearn. Jim wasn't just his boyfriend anymore - Jim was captain of this whole damn ship, and he deserved nothing less that Leonard's complete respect, especially when others were around.
Behind closed doors, that might be another story. "...you said something 'bout a surprise. Can I get a hint?" he asked, leaning in toward Jim.

"I kind of arranged something special for dinner," he explained, looking over at Bones to gauge his reaction. "Thought it might be nice to have a quiet evening, just the two of us. Does that sound all right?" he asked. Spock was on duty for Beta, and all was relatively quiet as everyone settled into their shipboard routines, but Jim knew it had been a long day for all of them. Especially Bones, getting new medical staff oriented and taking care of everyone.
Jim grinned at Bones, curling their fingers together. "Something you enjoy. A treat. And then... well, something else I hope you'll enjoy."

And he was worried about Leonard. People just didn't know how good a man Jim Kirk really was. "That sounds mighty fine, Jim." So good that he didn't pull back when the door opened, and another crew member stood waiting outside, eyes widening a bit when she saw the captain and the CMO gazing at each other.
They stepped out, and headed toward their room. "Now you've piqued my interest, hon. Do I get any hints?" he added as the door slid closed behind them.

"Good," he murmured as they stepped out of the lift. He nodded at Lieutenant Agostini. As they made their way down the corridor, he glanced over and smiled at Bones.
"You want a hint, hmm," Jim smirked as he stepped inside and turned to face Bones. "That's going to cost you."

Made Leonard want to do more for Jim, be a better man for him.
But first...
Leonard pushed Jim back against the wall - playful, his eyes warm and dancing. Leonard's fingers slid up from Jim's hip to his side, tugging on the bottom of his shirt. "Not a lot, I hope," he murmured, brushing his lips against Jim's jaw. "Someone promised me dinner."

He was starting to peel off his command gold when he felt Bones push him backward, and Jim went readily, a quiet sound escaping him when he felt his back hit the wall. His eyes darkened and he licked his lips as he stared back at Bones. "I might be willing to negotiate. For you. But then, the terms I had in mind were pretty fair to begin with."
Jim shivered a little, arching as Bones' fingers found his ticklish spots. "In fact, I think you read my mind," he breathed, his lips parted as he breathed in Bones' scent, warm and clean. "Dinner will be here in a few minutes."

They would be all right. Tilting his head, he leaned in for a soft kiss, just the barest pressure against Jim's soft lips. "Are you saying we should wait until after dinner?" he asked, fingers slipping under Jim's shirt, feeling the strong muscles along his back. "Like decent people?"
Reply
He was still smiling when their lips met, and Jim sighed as he opened for Bones. "I don't..." Jim paused for another soft, playful kiss. "...I don't recall ever mentioning the word decent about anything that might happen here tonight," he replied with a smirk as he arched away from the wall to give Bones some room to explore.
He settled his hands on Bones' hips and tugged him closer, wanting that full-body contact they hadn't been able to indulge in all day.

"Starfleet's golden boy," Leonard teased lightly as they kissed. Fuck, there had been all sorts of public relations images of Jim and Spock before they left, the Enterprise heading out into deep space. It made good press, Leonard knew, and for all his joking, he couldn't be more proud of Jim's accomplishments.
Right now, though, all he wanted was to feel that smooth skin next to his own. "You said something about a surprise?"
Reply
"And you, Bones. The best damn doctor in the fleet," he ground out, one hand sliding up beneath the layers of shirts at Bones' back while the other slipped down over the curve of his ass.
He leaned in for another slow, wet, dirty kiss as both hands moved up over the planes of Bones' back, rucking up his shirts to find that warm, tanned skin. "The surprise," he paused for another kiss, "is for after dinner. But I do have something for you now." Jim tugged Bones in for another nibbling, teasing kiss. "But you're gonna have to let me move..."

Leonard stepped back, allowing Jim some space. "While you're getting me my before dinner surprise, you can tell me how it went on the bridge. Nothing out of place, no nasty first day revelations about our first mission?"
Leonard walked toward their small kitchenette, leaning on a counter. "Drink?" he asked, reaching for two glasses.

He moved away slowly, brushing against Bones' warm, strong body as he went across the room to the desk. "Everything went pretty smoothly. No nasty surprises with our orders. Or any other kind of surprises, for that matter." Jim was pleased that their launch had gone so smoothly, and he gave the lion's share of that credit to his crew, who never failed to make him proud.
"Yeah, drinks sound good," Jim confirmed as he pulled what he wanted from the locked bottom drawer. "Had to keep this hidden, because I didn't want to spoil the surprise. Here, you open it," he said as he joined Bones in the kitchenette, the bottle of aged bourbon still sealed with melted wax.

Like that bottle. Taking a deep breath, Leonard shook his head as he accepted the bourbon. "I expect this'll take the edge off any nerves," he said, admitting to a little of the trepidation he'd tried hard to hold in today. Leaning in, he tilted his head and kissed Jim again, this time more tenderly, softer. "You don't miss a thing, do you?"

His hand lingered on Bones' hip as they stood there next to the counter. "The bourbon was just the first surprise, though," he murmured. "Don't forget, there's something else to come." His lips twitched just a little, and Jim started to lean in for another kiss when the chime rang announcing their dinner.
"Looks like dinner is served," he said with a grin, going to greet Ensign Robards and thank her for delivering their meal. "Bones, have a seat," Jim instructed as the ensign left with a smile for both of them. He brought their drinks over and made an approving noise when he uncovered the juicy, hot steak and scalloped potatoes on his plate.

Reaching across, he took Jim's hand in his own, a tender touch that still felt new and exciting, especially now that they were back on board. "I heard a couple Admirals stopped by to send us off this morning before we took off. Anything you can share yet, or..." Leonard took a long drink, curious about their five year mission. There were some details that he still didn't know about, certain aspects that had to remain, for the time being, between Jim and Spock and their supervisors. "Nothing too dangerous, not at first, I hope."

Nothing had tasted good at first, but as he had gained strength and begun to actually feel hunger again, Bones had kept him more or less to those good habits he'd tried to build. Jim was grateful for that, and put up only a token fuss now and then, just because he liked to tease.
He cut into his steak and took a bite, then glanced up when Bones spoke. "Barnett and Gravitt," he confirmed with a nod. "We've got a diplomatic mission out in sector 007. Should be pretty straightforward--oh, and we've got a payload of medical supplies for Starbase 76. After that, we're on our standing orders, exploring the rest of that sector and then onward." Jim shrugged. "Sounds routine, to begin with. I have to say... I'm okay with that. I'm looking forward to the time to get acquainted with the upgrades Scotty and his team installed while she was in spacedock," he added, glancing around the room and giving a faint smile as he caught that familiar quiet hum.
Jim nudged Bones' foot with his own. "What about you? How's everyone settling in over in Medical?"
