Going back to the loft alone had given Jim a few minutes to reflect upon all that had happened since he'd awakened. It wasn't that he hadn't wanted Bones along, but even he had to admit everything had been moving fast for the past month. As he had packed up the last box of things to bring to the house, he'd reflected that maybe it had been a test, this last trip alone. Just to make sure he had no regrets.
But the loft still felt cold and empty, a showplace he'd never quite grown accustomed to since picking it up and putting the work into renovating the space in his down time. When he'd come back here after waking up, he'd recognized that it wasn't home. He didn't want it to be.
No, Jim thought as he pulled the car up outside the house. He looked up and saw Bones coming out the door to help and knew that home wasn't anything so mundane as a physical space. For Jim, it was wherever this man was, and he just hoped his calm certainty didn't scare Bones off. He climbed out of the car, unable to help the smile that tugged at his lips as Bones approached. "All done," he said. Bones looked a little unsettled, and Jim caught him by the hand and squeezed. "It's not a whole lot, I know. More than I thought, but... it seems I haven't acquired a whole lot."
"Been too busy up there," Leonard's eyes glanced upward, toward where their ship was being repaired. Jim's hand in his did a lot to quell his nerves, and Leonard couldn't help but see that smile on Jim's face. This was going to work out. "Not a lot of time for shopping for knick knacks."
Tugging Jim inside, Leonard kicked the door closed behind him. They could get those last few boxes later. "I made some room in the closet, but wasn't sure which box had all your clothes." He still didn't feel right about plunging into Jim's things, not yet. That would have to change soon, though. "So, I guess we should talk about chores and stuff?" he asked, his arm wrapped tight around Jim's waist. "If my memory serves me right, back at the Academy you never did learn how to use a dishwasher."
"I guess so." It didn't make sense to get attached to the idea of acquiring things that would have to go into storage sooner or later. Books were the one real exception--but then, the most treasured of those could go with him when they went back up. "I'm glad of it, too. It made packing up easier."
He let Bones pull him inside and smiled as the door shut behind them. Jim had handed the keys over to the new owners of his loft, so this felt a little different now. Seeing the boxes of books next to the shelves in the living room and the other things piled next to the sofa... it all felt right. "I guess we should," Jim agreed, smiling and turning to kiss Bones' cheek. He smirked as he pulled back, his own arm snaking around Bones' waist. "I ran the dishwasher. Occasionally. I just lived on take out and cafeteria food most of the time." He leaned against Bones as they wandered toward the kitchen. "I don't mind sharing the chores. Or the grocery shopping, though I suppose you'll want to supervise that and make sure I actually buy a few vegetables on occasion?" Jim's tone was light and teasing, but his expression was attentive. "I think we could play it by ear," he began slowly, "and just both pitch in to get things done together. Or we can divide things up, if that doesn't work."
Leonard gave Jim one of those looks, the kind that he often sported when he and Jim were back in school. But Jim was right - this was new and different, and he shouldn't go into this with his preconceived notions of how Jim was. Things had changed and they were both older now, different - and Jim had lived on his own, presumably taken care of himself. Like an adult.
Still, Leonard made a grumpy little noise as he pulled Jim closer, their foreheads touching. "Playing it by ear, hmmm," he began, unable to hide the grin. "I guess we can try that. And yeah, we can grocery shop together for a while, make sure we both get what we like." In a way, it still felt like roommate stuff, which it was.
Except for the bedroom. "Have you told anyone that you're here now?" he asked, wondering how many of Jim's friends knew about this. "Thought that maybe we could have some people over for dinner one of these nights."
Jim smiled as their foreheads touched, and he slid both his arms around Bones' waist, his hands slipping just beneath the hem of his shirt. "Okay, then. We'll try it for a while and figure out what works best." He rubbed his nose against Bones'. "And to go along with that, we'll let each other know when we've got a lot going on at work and we're going to be late, or just need a little more help." He smiled. It was a lot like roommate stuff, ground rules, all of that. Except that they weren't just roommates, not any more.
He brushed his lips against Bones', soft and slow. "Spock knows, and Uhura." He flushed a little and shrugged. "And I suppose, given the nature of their connection with Dr. Marcus, that she knows too, or will soon." He paused. "I updated my address, but I haven't spread the news to everyone yet. I wasn't sure how you'd want to handle it." Jim rubbed circles on Bones' lower back, his expression curious, but it brightened at the idea of having people over. "I'd like that. Maybe just a small group of friends?"
It would be another kind of adventure, the two of them navigating this strange new world of cohabitation. The kisses weren't bad either, Leonard thought to himself as his hand reached up and found the back of Jim's neck, fingers threading up into the back of Jim's hair as the kiss deepened.
Leonard wasn't sure how he wanted to handle it either. On the one hand, this, what they had - it was sweet and private and still just theirs, because once it got out, the Starfleet gossip would be rampant. On the other hand, as Leonard looked into Jim's eyes and felt himself falling into them, all he wanted to do was shout this from the top of the hills, that Jim Kirk belonged to him. A wave of possessiveness washed over him, and he growled softly at the feel of Jim's hands on his back. "The bridge crew, I'd like to see all of them. Maybe a couple of my medical staff." Nosy nurses and medics, they'd all find out sooner rather than later.
A wide smile broke across his face. "A barbecue. Let's have a barbecue." It had been a long time since he'd pulled out his fancy over-sized grill.
"A barbecue. Yeah," Jim said with a grin. "Something relaxing and fun. I'd like to see the bridge crew, and Scotty. Maybe a couple of people from science, too." He kissed Bones again, giving a soft rumble of approval at the fingers in his hair. "Sounds just about perfect."
He rubbed his nose against Bones', pulling him in the direction of the sofa. The rest of the unpacking could wait for a little while. Right now, he just wanted to feel Bones next to him, and maybe hear more of those growls that made him ache. "We've been moving boxes all day. I think it's time for a break," he murmured, tugging Bones down with him.
Leonard laughed as he let Jim pull him into the living area, and before he knew it they were on the sofa, hands and lips and legs touching and rubbing against each other. Jim kissed like nothing he ever knew before, whole body kisses that lit up Leonard's insides. "Yes sir, Captain," he murmured, burying his face against Jim's neck. He smelled so damn good, sunshine and cologne and whatever it was that was just Jim.
His hands found Jim's face, and he touched him tenderly, fingertips grazing the stubbly skin. "Any other orders, sir?" he asked as his thumbs ran up and down Jim's jawline.
Jim laughed softly, one hand curled around Bones' shoulder as he leaned back, lowering himself to the sofa. "I'm sure you can think of something," he murmured, his other hand settling on Bones' back, pulling him down over him. He nuzzled against Bones, then pulled back, studying him with a soft, crooked smile. "Thank you," he said at last, his voice not quite a whisper.
He trailed a hand down over Bones' neck, his fingers stroking Bones' warm skin as he moved to cup his cheek, his thumb resting at the corner of that lush mouth. How to say how much this meant to him? Jim wasn't sure, and he didn't want to spook Bones, not again. "I'm glad I'm here," he said at last, the words breathed against Bones' lips.
He felt himself being pulled down on top of Jim, and a hundred ideas flew through Leonard's head - all of them involving their two naked bodies. Leonard's hands slipped under the back of Jim's t-shirt, hands running across the smooth planes of Jim's muscular back, such warm skin. But it was that smile that broke Leonard's heart open - shy and sweet and almost sad in a way, but so honest. Thank you. Jim would never know how much Leonard loved him for those two words.
Jim wasn't the sort to shy away from grand statements, but there was something happening right now, the two of them being quiet and tender with each other, their fingers and kisses speaking louder than their words. "There's no where else in the universe I ever want you to be." Another admission of his feelings, saying so much in just a few words, but Leonard hoped that Jim understood what was in his heart.
His smile grew then, lighting his face up as Bones spoke, and Jim pressed closer. There was nowhere else he wanted to be, and as his lips grazed Bones' cheek he sighed, nuzzling against him. This was sweet and gentle and so powerful, the way he felt the words that Bones wasn't saying, the words that were on the tip of his own tongue.
But maybe they didn't need the words quite yet, not when they could feel them like this. Jim rubbed circles on the bare skin beneath his fingers, shifting so that he could look into Bones' eyes as he kissed him this time, trying to show everything he felt in that one look.
They lay there together on that sofa for the better part of an hour, kissing and touching. Their t-shirts both ended up on the ground, next to their shoes, their pants pushed down toward their knees as their hands found their way inside each other's briefs.
Leonard nuzzled against Jim's shoulder after he came with a groan, then kept his hand moving until he saw Jim's eyes widen, riding through his own orgasm. "I think I like having a roommate," he murmured. "Can we do this again tomorrow?"
Jim curled against Bones, a little breathless and a whole lot surprised by that orgasm. He'd been so focused on Bones and making him feel good, on how good it felt to just lie there together, kissing, their hands wandering and clothes slowly disappearing as they mapped each other's skin in kisses. He hadn't been worried about his body reacting.
Maybe that was it, he mused as he nuzzled against Bones. "I love it," Jim breathed as his lips brushed Bones' cheek. "We can do this every day, if you want." Jim reached one arm out and groped on the floor for his t-shirt, snagging it and using it to clean them up a little before balling it up and tossing it back down. His arms wrapped back around Bones then, and Jim tucked tucked his face against Bones' neck, one hand sliding up into his short hair.
Watching Jim cleaning up all his mess from their hands, it occurred to Leonard that he could be a really selfish prick. "Hey Jim... you don't mind me touching you like that... do you?" All of a sudden, he felt worried, and more than a little stupid, just assuming that Jim wanted to be doing this all the time, when he was still dealing with his inability to maintain a real erection.
Some doctor he was... Pressing his forehead against Jim's. "You can tell me to stop you know, if I start getting too pushy or if you don't feel like-" Leonard paused, kissing Jim"- if you don't want to."
He blinked as he looked up at Bones, not quite following him at first. Then Jim shook his head, his hands coming up to cradle Bones' face. "Do I mind? No--of course not." He felt his cheeks flood with heat, but Jim just tugged Bones in for a slow, tender kiss. When he pulled back he was a little breathless, but his eyes were bright and clear. "I love being with you," he murmured. "You're not making me do anything I don't want to, all right? This... it felt amazing."
Jim shook his head, a soft snort of amusement escaping him even as his heart squeezed tight in his chest at the notion of Bones worrying about this, wanting to make sure Jim felt the same, that he wanted this. He kissed Bones back, his hands sliding to rake through Bones' hair, massaging his scalp. "If I'm not in the mood for sex, I'll tell you," he promised, his voice low as he held Bones close. "But I love everything we've done. I just... I don't know how to fix that, and I don't know how long it will take," he began, hesitant as he tried to explain how he felt about it. "I don't want to worry about it, because that was making it even worse, I think." He nuzzled against Bones. "Okay?"
Leonard tried not to look smugly satisfied at Jim's words and kiss, secretly thrilled at the subtle use of 'L' word, nested in there. It had been good, this physical act between them, and Leonard suspected it would only get better, once Jim's situation was 'resolved'.
But if felt good to hear Jim tell him that he'd be okay with saying no to Leonard. Meant that they were more than just the sex. "Okay, Jim... no need to worry, you're right." Stretching his legs, he let then tangle comfortably against Jim's, and for a few moments they just lay there, fingers touching and listening to each other breathe.
Then Leonard's video terminal began beeping. "Computer - audio only. Hello," he called out, nuzzling against Jim's jaw. No sense getting dressed just yet. "This is Doctor McCoy speaking."
A moment later he heard a small squeaky voice. "Hi Daddy! It's me!" Then, "I can't see you, where's your face?"
