He heard the words, like someone was speaking, but it was just one voice this time, as if they were talking to him. Too soft to make out the conversation, there was a tonal quality to them that was so familiar he knew the speaker instinctively, despite not understanding the words.

Don't be sad, Jim.

His eyes wouldn't open, but he was close enough to the surface to know someone was next to him, Jim was next to him. Bits and pieces of words hit him now.

fuck you know how much I hit on you?

Just not sure why, yet, ya know?

Jim, he thought, willing himself to open his eyes. When that failed, he concentrated all his energy on his hand, the one being touched, held.

He squeezed as hard as he could, hoping that Jim would feel him, hoping that it was enough to let the other man know he was there.

Blue eyes snapped open and Kirk stared down at his hand and the one tucked away in his own. "...Bones?" He said, looking up to the other's face. He squeezed tightly on the hand in his. "Bones? I'm here, man. I need you to wake up. I need you to come back to us, okay? I... I... fuck." His eyes closed tightly, hand gripping harder, the other making a fist.

The contact brought him closer to the surface, Jim's words clearer this time.

Trying - I'm trying, Jim... Jim's fingers squeezed back hard, and it hurt this time. His fingertips moved slightly and his breath hitched.
