Bones watched as his medical crew came down from their crisis that day - he'd had no doubt that they were the finest crew to be had in the fleet, but to see them in action today... even as distracted as he was, he knew they'd performed superbly ( Read more... )

He opened his eyes slowly, and wondered if he was going to float again. It started out just the same, how long it took his vision to focus on anything. He thought about the golden sounds of Jim's voice, encouraging him, and decided to keep his eyes open.

He lifted his head, just a little, despite the slow throb of it. He looked over to the dark blob nearby and waited for it to come into focus. Bones? Bones was laying there, asleep, against the bed.

Bones? He tried to force the word out of his mouth, but his throat wouldn't respond. His lips mouthed the word instead. He felt so tired, like he wanted to close his eyes and go back to sleep, but he focused on slowly moving his hand.

He let out a tiny sound when it finally sunk into dark strands of hair, just resting there. Even the light touch made him shudder - his body felt too sensitive.

Bones was sleeping pretty deep, but the movement on the bed, as slight as it was roused him enough- or maybe he heard Kirk, felt the word, the question, his name hanging between them. Whatever it was, it brought him out of his drowsy state enough to see that Kirk's eyes were open. Those eyes...

Leaning up, he hung over Kirk's face, looking down at that face in the darkened area, that face he loved, didn't matter what else was going on. Just looking at him, Bones' face still looked tired, but his hazel eyes shone with a light that hadn't been there for days.

Bones. Kirk's eyes were still a bit on the unfocused side, but he tracked Bones' movements. He blinked once, then gave a slow, sweet smile. So small, that smile, but there.

The dim lights in the room let him keep focused on the man above him, keep his thoughts focused. It felt almost like he could feel the joy bubbling up in Bones, and something else that felt as warm as waking up curled up in blankets in the morning, as potent as a swig of whiskey.

One hand reached out to thread that soft hair, so soft. "Hey you," Bones whispered, his face finally breaking out into a smile.
