Once Jim left Spock's house, he found some clothes that fit, said goodbye to Nyota and nodded confusedly at Spock before heading out in the car that brought him there nearly a week before

"I have no clue if they knew the first time. I was a little busy being a self-centered traumatized seven year old," Jo pointed out. "It didn't change things, the first time. The second time it did. They started to meld into the foursome that they turned into."
"From what I heard with my little-pitcher ears? They were fucking scary in the field. Came in handy, when they had to go under comm silence, they could split up, and still know what the others were doing. Really annoying to try to get around any of them as parents either. If you were busted by one, you were busted by all of t hem and there weren't any 'well Daddy said I could' games. And all of them had a hard time lying to Daddy about medical care."
"When the bond got stronger after the second time? Papa was a lot more careful. Daddy observed that where I could hear once. Papa said it was because he had people who worried about him, for the first time. He felt how terrified folks got when he got hurt. And then they kicked me out to go study in the library." She smiled slightly at that. "I got kicked out to go to the library a lot."
Bones wanted to smile. He did. He wanted to believe that they might one day coalesce into this team, this foursome, these bondmates who would loved each other. That Joanna's Bones and Jim managed to make it work, so he and Jim would as well.
But right now, with the pressure in his head building back up again, Bones was having a fucking hard time picturing it. Rubbing at the back of his neck seemed to help a little, so he did that. "Your dad and Jim. This shit didn't affect them?"
Bones shook his head at her. "Goddammit, just tell me that they managed to do it - to make it work with this damned bond to someone else between them. Tell me that this didn't completely screw them up." His hands were shaking now, and he couldn't look at her, not now.
"I can do that. Everything turned out okay. Nothing that happened left lasting impressions, except when they wanted it to. Everyone loved each other equally, and the only fighting they did lead to more me studying in the libary. They never ever went to bed angry. No one had problems reconciling and compromise was easy and rarely even needed." Jo hugged him lightly. Every single word of it was bullshit. They did go to bed angry, they did have to argue long and hard, lots of times no one went to bed happy. But they did it and they were her model for a good relationship by the end.
Bones couldn't even laugh. She was trying, and on one level he could even appreciate it, but right now, it hurt too much. He hurt too much.
Those people she described, that wasn't Jim and him. It never was easy for them, and stubborn bastards that they were, probably never would be. But he just wanted to know that they'd be okay.
"I think you should go now," he said, pulling away from the hug. This wasn't working. Wasn't what he needed.
Jo frowned, he was...wrong. She gathered her purse. "Love you Dad."
She left, staring at the door. Something really wasn't right. She debated sending a message to someone, and decided to go to the bar tonight. She wasn't sure who to send the message to. Something didn't go right obviously.
