OT: Dragoncon 09 Hotel Reservations--Important!

Oct 05, 2008 20:25

(NOTE: I'm editing this post, adding more info that has come my way.)

For those of you who attend D*C each year, and like to stay in the host hotels, you had better get your reservation as soon as possible. I keep up with general D*C info by reading the Yahoogroups email list "dragoncon", and also by reading the Live Journal community dragoncon . From reading these, the host hotel rooms are going fast!

The Marriott Marquis sold out on October 1st, the day that the D*C block opened. I have no idea if the D*C owners didn't reserve enough rooms in the D*C room block, or what. See below for more hotel info. However, this is not D*C's fault.

(NOTE: this is out of D*C's hands, seemingly, because of the pilots' con. Protesting to the Marriott probably won't do any good.)

Also, there's this: some national federation of airline pilots has chosen the Marriott as their main hotel for their national convention, and it runs the same weekend as D*C! I have heard that the airline pilots' con reserved anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of the rooms at the Marriott.

(NOTE: this con has to do with Delta; supposedly Delta and the Marriott chain have some kind of connection. D*C got 1100 of the 1663 rooms and suites, so that means that the pilots' con only got about a third of the rooms. How this affects the functions rooms is yet to be seen.)

Surely, D*C was giving the Marriott plenty of business this year and past years. Why the hotel took in this other convention is difficult to understand. D*C this past year used almost all the function space in the Marriott, and had a good-sized room block. Whenever I passed by, there were lines for the restaurants, the bar, Starbucks, and the M Shop, or else they were full and busy.

So all this sounds like someone running D*C fell down on the job, and didn't get the D*C contracts for the room blocks in a timely fashion?

(NOTE: I have since been informed that the D*C folks got their paperwork in on time on the last day of D*C, when they were allowed to, by the hotels. So any blame looks like it goes to the hotels, seemingly.)

And let's don't forget that that college football game, played at the GA Dome, looks to be an annual events, thus taking even more rooms away from D*C attendees.

There may be still rooms in the Hyatt and the Sheraton, but I don't know. When I called the Hilton, I was told that I got one of the last rooms in the D*C room block, and I could not reserve the room for Monday night.

You will not need the hotel codes, just tell them that you want a room for D*C and the reservation desk has the codes already. Good luck!
