Granite Corp. & Med Lee.

The past two negotiations were fairly inactive for me. I was sick, so i did not participate in the MedLee negotiation and i was an observer for the Granite Corp Negotiation. In this Journal Entry, i will just write what would have expected from the MedLee negotiation and what i observed in the Granite Corp negotiation.

In the MedLee negotiation, two parties, MedDevice and Lee Medical wanted to form an international joint venture, which would provide MedDevice a successful expansion overseas, something that they have a hard time doing and it would also provide Lee Medical with much more advanced medical products to offer more to its customers. As i read through this case, it seemed that a deal would be fairly easy to reach, however there would be some areas that may cause tension. Mr. Lee's employee base consists heavily of his relatives and very close friends. MedDevice sees this as a problem because they employ only the highest quality individuals who have passed certification standards. Mr. Lee would not be willing to replace those individuals who he holds so dearly. A solution I thought of was to have each of Mr. Lee's employees tested to see how capable they are then show him the results if they were not suited for the job.

The next negotiation I observed was between the President of Costa Rica and a lumber company known as Granite. Also there was an environmentalist support group present at this meeting but they only stated their case for 10 minutes, then seemed to be disconnected from the rest of the negotiation. The special interests environmental group wanted the lumber company out of the country completely, stating that the lumber mill was ruining the floral environment and ecotourism of Costa Rica. The president felt that this was not an option, considering that they gain a large income from the tax of their exports. Also , running them out of the country would ruin Costa Ricas reputation for future deals with housing international companies. The students who were playing the environmentalist felt frustrated because their main interest was being completely ignored, making them feel inferior in this negotiation. The felt they deserved more respect because it was through their efforts that the president was elected this term. The end deal catered to some of the other interests of the environmentalist. What i saw that intrigued me is that it seemed that granite would be trying their best to keep the environmentalist quiet, yet it was the president turning down their requests in this negotiation. The students then proceeded to fill out their debrief sheets and reflected what worked and what didnt work for this negotiation. I have really enjoyed these exercises in this class. They have taught me important life skills that i have no doubt I will be using in the future.
