New modem/router has been connected to iiNet for 12 hours now without a dropout. That's 11 hours longer than the old modem had managed at any time since they "upgraded" their infrastructure the weekend before last.

David, I noticed you mentiond "Alcatel Speedtouch Home ADSL modem" -- if you want improved selling, I suggest you upgrade it to the Pro version.

http://www.petri.co.il/upgrade_from_alcatel_speedtouch_home_to_pro.htm

I did this on my SpeedTouch (via Telstra), and it worked fine (I also upgraded to the latest firmware). Afterwards I had the Alcatel doing all the NAT routing, DHCP, etc plugged straight into the home network (previously I had an old, tired Linux box doing the same thing).

In our new house we moved to Optus, however, so the Alcatel is now sitting in a box somewhere.

The "upgrade" is pretty simple, apparently the Home and Pro versions use exactly the same firmware/bios, etc, and the only thing that gives the different features is a single memory value switch -- change that switch, and all the advanced features are enabled!

Don't ya just love technology.

With Optus we've got whatever cable modem they provided, plus a Linksys WRT54G as the router/wireless for my laptop (which I'm using now) -- works fine; at work they have some DLink wireless router (which they are using as an access point) but it really sux and goes down all the time. Oh well.
