The room was black. Blacker then the night sky he so often flew under. It was as black as them. Except where it wasn't. Red also filled the room, his blood seeping out and staining the floor. His once white outfit was also a mixture of red and black.
Even he himself, covered in bruises and blood, fit the pattern. It was inescapable.
He didn't want to die like this. If he had to die, he'd much rather it be in a burst of glory on a heist then locked away in a cellar. But he supposed this wasn't something people often got to choose.
It wouldn't be long now.
He would never see Aoko, Hakuba, his mother, or him ever again.
His time was up.
The darkness took him.
"Open you eyes Kaito."
Using his last ounce of strength, the thief opened his eyes and saw an angel. A damn weird angel, but one none the less.
Kudo Shinichi, stood before him. What struck Kaito wasn't the odd black toga-thingy he was wearing, or even how he got there in the first place. It was the feathered wings sticking out of the detectives back. Sharp, like a falcon's with black feathers. There were also red feathers arranged in such a way as to look like splattered blood.
"Always knew you weren't normal." Kaito croaked,
Shinichi shrugged, sending interesting ripples through his bare shoulders. "It's how I pay the rent."
"Rent?"
"I was supposed to die the night I was poisoned. I was allowed to continue living-for a price."
The far away look in his eyes told Kaito that soul-collecting was only part of it. "What about me? How much do I have to pay?"
Shinichi shook his head, "It's not like a car that you pay off. Being an avatar of Death is...it can take away your smile, permanently. I don't...heaven is so much nicer."
"I'd rather go to hell!" Kaito snarled, "I'd rather go to hell then let them hurt anyone else!"
"Please," the dark angel pleaded.
"Please," Kaito answered in commanding tone.
Shinichi sighed, knowing he had lost. "I never wanted this for you," he whispered as he kissed Katio.
Kaito's eye widened as far as they could go as pure power surged through his body. All he could see were red and black flames, but all he could feel was Shinichi. Shinichi's hands, Shinichi's lips, Shinichi's breath.
As his injuries healed, Kaito became more active, holding his angel, his angel, and caressing him. His tongue darted in between Shinichi's lips and felt two small fangs where his incisors should be. Fangs he could feel he himself growing.
With a final surge of power two wings sprang from Kaito's back, twins of Shinich's except shaped more like a raven's.
"That," Kaito panted. "Was a hell of a first kiss."
Shinichi grinned. "Care to try for a second?"
~
"Okay, this has gotten to the point of beyond coincidence."
"Geeze Hakuba, you think I like having dead bodies falling around me. Besides, you know I don't hurt people."
Hakuba glowered at what once probably the closest to an admition of Kid's true identity. Not that Kid had been around much. Not since they found the burned and bloody Kid outfit in a dark cellar. Popular opinion was that he was dead, but that couldn't be true since Kuroba was alive and kicking, right?
Still, the amount of dead bodies showing up lately had some people questioning whether Kuroba Kaito was really Kudo Shinichi in disguise.
"Anyway, I'm going to go hang out with a friend of mine, who doesn't make baseless accusations." the magician waved off Hakuba and ran over to a small boy.
The child's face lit up immediately upon seeing Kaito, then sent a death glare to Hakuba. One that clearly read "MINE!"
"Don't pursue it" the British dectective heard Koizumi whisper from behind.
The witch grinned. "The raven and the dove have been reborn as phoenixes through the red and black flame. And any who messes with a black phoenix will only be burned to a crisp.
