How Truly, Truly Sad

So get this, I was in my Art History class yesterday and of course, as anyone thats ever been in an art history course will tell you, we are viewing slides of artwork done by the artists (or really, in this case, reflect the art period) we're discussing. Now, this class is mostly full of students that are getting a degree in some kind of art form, whether it be EMAT, Art, Graphic Design, etc. A sculpture of a urinal (that's right) pops up on the projection screen. This one girl is confused, is asks if this is the photograph that was displayed, or if the artist had actually displayed a 3-D urinal. I could understand why someone may get that confused, I mean, some people wouldn't neccessarily think of an urinal as a sculpture piece (for argument's sake, it is!). The professor explains to the young girl that the artist did infact take a real urinal, put it upside down, and displayed it as such in an exhibition.

The professor goes on with her lecture.

Later on another slide comes up with yet another sculpture, "This is a sculpture entitled _____ by _____, *blah blah blah*." The young girl from before, again, raises her hand and asks, "Is that a photo?" The teacher explains to the young girl that it is a photo slide of the sculpture exhibited. The girl is still confused as to whether what she is being shown is a sculpture or a photo. The professor must further explain to her that it was presented as a sculpture but she could not bring the sculpture for us to see so she is presenting us a picture, a photo, of the sculpture, but we are in no way studying the photo, we are studying the sculpture in the photo.

I was about ready to ask this girl how the hell she's survived an art class, nonetheless got into UT.
I truly hope she doesn't get a degree in any of the arts, or else my little faith I have for UT's appreciation of the fine arts will completely be lost.
