Lazy Sunday Afternoons (Open)

It's a rare sight to see Maxine Hunkel sitting still.

It's even rarer sight to see her sitting still, completely silent.

In this case, she's lying down on the sofa in the JSA Brownstone, totally absorbed in her copy of Pride and Prejudice, which she's rereading for about the ten-thousandth time ( Read more... )

Ma is going to enjoy her peace, by God. She's humming "Minnie the Moocher" out in the kitchen where rhubarb pie and banana bread are being made for the week while she glazes a ham.

The scents of the rhubarb pie and banana bread reach Maxine in the living room.

It's enough to snap her out of her reading-induced coma.

Following the smells of her Gramma's cooking, she drifts into the kitchen.

"Hmm....rhubarb pie..."

"Not until it is done and cooled, young lady! I already had to slap your Uncle Ted's knuckles so my spoon is good and warmed up."

There are baked goods and Jakeem can smell them. "Dude, where's the pie?"

"C'mon Gramma! Just one teeny-tiny little slice. Pleeeease?"

She "harrumps." "Think you can use that mouth to cool these pies then, Maxine?"

The sound of a small child's sneakers romping through the hall is heard. Half boy and half mist, half through the doorway and half through the wall, Teddy Knight's been drawn to the smell of the baked goods, too.

He straightens his clothes as he solidifies, brushing grass and twigs from his hair. He's obviously been playing in the garden, and his hands and clothes are muddy. "Ooh, snacks! Can I take some out to, oh, out to-- um, Mr, um, Superboy, he's got Krypto, his dog, in the yard, and I could-- I could take some out to them?"

"That will make Krypto sick, Teddy." Dr. Mid-Nite is on a strict diet, but Ma generally has something he can enjoy.

Guh. "It won't make me sick though." Dude, this place smells awesome.

"Do you have super dog biscuits? 'Cuz then Ms. Maxine could just WHOOSH them outside and Krypto could catch 'em."

The kid probably doesn't need more sugar, but it looks like Ma Hunkel's got a pretty hungry crowd. Teddy had a grapefruit for breakfast, anyway. (Most of which wound up on his t-shirt)

"Young man, there will be no leaping through my begonias! You hear me!" Ma has already done a headcount and put out some buffalo wings she had (just in case). She sets out some marinated mushrooms for the doctor since he has a rabbit diet.

Maxine reaches over and ruffles Teddy hair. "Super dog biscuits. Can't say I've heard of those before, kiddo."

Maxine takes a buffalo wing, nibbling on it, still eying the pies. Maybe, since there's other people here, Gramma won't notice if she steals one teeny-tiny little slice...

Those boys don't look like they're heeding her. Ma heads on out leaving those pies unguarded.
