The Trial of a Green Lantern

"It was murder." Shilandra Thane is irate. Since the destruction of her world in nuclear war, she focuses her efforts on peace and understanding... but what she has seen has pushed her too far. "Amon Sur was murdered." She points an accusing finger towards the killer ( Read more... )

"In accordance with the new law of the Book of Oa, lethal force is authorized against any member of the Sinestro Corps," Salaak points out dryly.

If Chaselon could frown, he would. One of his robotic limbs twists in annoyance. Salaak has long been a member of the Corps, as has Chaselon, and he has respect for the Lantern, but in this case, he believes him to be in error.

"With all due respect, Salaak, I suspect you have yet to view the ring log of the incident."

"I have witnessed the log of the confrontation, Chaselon," Sir Deeter states emphatically. "Laira did nothing but follow the strict code of the Corps."

Around them, the voices of other Lanterns begin to raise in debate.

Varix steps forward to Sir Deeter, skeptical.

"Cold-blooded slaughter may be commonplace on your medieval world, 'Sir' Deeter," Varix scoffs, skeptical at Deeter's title. "But where I come from..."

"Save it, Commander Varix," Kraken interrupts. "Where you come from, a murderer cannot be sentenced to more than two years in prison."

That is nothing. Kraken has lived through the hell that was Granny Goodness's orphanage on Apocalypse. Her partner was tortured for years by Desaad. Two years imprisonment for murder? Meaningless.

"STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, KRAKEN, THERE HAS NOT BEEN A MURDER ON VARIX'S PLANET IN OVER SEVENTY-FOUR YEARS."

"My people live to obey the law," Varix says smugly.

"He sounds like Sinestro," Relok Hag mutters to Turytt. Though he was technically a Lost Lantern, Relok never fit in with the team which Laira now stands near.

But he notices that the Lost Lantern team she has worked with so much has been surprisingly mute. They have said nothing in her defense.

"Varix's religion is his uniform, Relok," Turytt replies. Varix was selected from among the lawkeepers of a particularly law-abiding world, where religion and the legal system are one and the same. Turytt has had many encounters with Varix, and knows just how important the law is to him.

But Turytt otherwise keeps quiet. Ke'haan had been his best friend, and Amon Sur murdered his family. He would rather give Laira a parade of honor for killing him... whether it was murder or not. He does not trust himself to have an unclouded opinion in this matter.

"Ignore the soft-hearted, Kraken," Raker Qarrigat snarls. "They are ignorant of the true horrors of the universe."

Horrors such as Desaad's torture pits, or much of anything else on Apokalips. He moves to Kraken's side, by his partner, where he belongs.

Chaselon sighs. This is completely beside the point.

"Must we listen to the hardships you and Kraken faced on Apokalips again, Raker? Your stories..."

"Apokalips is more important to the future of this universe than Oa will ever be!" Kraken spits.

"Blasphemy!" Shilandra accuses.
