Rage, Rage, Against the Dying of the Light...
Somehow, Malvolio survived... as he has always done. Sinestro took the Manhunters from him, and yet he survived.
It took him centuries to build everything that Sinestro and the Green Lanterns took away in just months. He was born with almost nothing... an outcast. Half human, half alien. His mother died in childbirth. His father, a Green Lantern, took him along into space to raise him, but he never really cared about him. Never truly gave him anything at all. So Malvolio took the only thing he wanted from his father: his ring. Of course, his father couldn't be left alive to attempt to take it back...
He built himself an empire. People worshiped him. Loved him. Feared him. When Hal Jordan came to his world, he saw an opportunity to further protect himself from Oan reprisal. He switched rings with the human before faking his own death, so that if the Guardians ever attempted to track down his father's ring, they'd only find it on Hal Jordan.
He took control of the Manhunters, and gathered Green Lanterns from across the galaxy, Lanterns believed dead. He brainwashed the Lanterns, using them as additional foot-soldiers whenever he needed them.
But the Green Lanterns freed the so-called "Lost Lanterns." The Sinestro Corps did worse, stealing away the Manhunters and destroying his home.
He survived... somehow. But since slaughtering one of the Sinestro Corps members in cold rage, beating his head in with his power battery... his powers have been behaving... strangely. The Lantern itself has seemed stained... he can't seem to fully get all of the blood off of it. His ring occasionally sparks with red plasma.
He needs answers.
So he has come here. Sector 666. A dead sector.
Millennia ago, when the Manhunters served the Guardians as their peacekeepers, the androids chose this sector to go mad in. They slaughtered virtually every living being in the entire sector teeming with life... all save five. These five, the Five Inversions, formed the Empire of Tears, which sought to destroy the Guardians for their countless crimes. They were defeated, so the Oans sentenced them to live on the planet Ysmault, crucified, but never dying. There, they would whisper their dark prophecies to any who defied the Guardians to come to Ysmault and listen.
Abin Sur once listened to their prophecies... and Malvolio has learned that it was this act which led to his death... which led to Hal Jordan gaining a power ring. But more than that... Malvolio learned that Abin Sur took one of the Inversions from his prison... and that Inversion was the one who killed him. And it was Sinestro and Hal Jordan, working together, who returned the Inversion to his prison shortly thereafter.
He must speak to this Inversion. What possible prophecy could the Inversion speak which would cause a Green Lantern, particularly one as honored as Abin Sur, to remove it from its prison? Against all rules of the Guardians of the Universe?
He will speak with this Inversion. And he will learn its secrets.
And together, they will recreate the Empire of Tears. He will have his revenge on the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps, and he will regain all the power he once had... and then some.
