Sympathy for the Devil

Eddie stands in front of a door to a house in a neighborhood in El Paso, Texas. It's just past noon, on a Sunday, and there are plenty of people just hanging out on their porches with their kids. Which doesn't exactly help Eddie. He's wearing his lucky orange hoodie, and he takes his communicator out of it's pocket, flipping it open to his text ( Read more... )

Jaime had told his parents about what Eddie looked like, and that Eddie'd promised to come in a hoodie and stuff to hide how he looked so no one saw Kid Devil entering their house, giving his secret ID away. They had assumed that he had told Milagro. Jaime assumed that they had told Milagro.

Neither of them had told Milagro. These kinds of communication problems in families happen sometimes.

"I'll get it!"

As such, Milagro opens the door, looks out, and...

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

"Wild terror" is likely the best term to describe that kinda scream.

Eddie has about a second to look down before

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

"Unpleasant Shock" is the kind of scream Eddie lets out, complete with a big, glowing and gaping mouth.

"AAAAAAAAH! Mom! Dad!" Milagro finally unfreezes and runs from the door. "MOM! DAD!"

Her mother meets her in the hallway, picking up the baseball bat there as she goes. All she sees is a hooded, scary figure at the front door and her daughter screaming--it temporarily slips her mind that Eddie is due over today. She's a little too busy going all Mama Bear.

"Who are you? Get the hell away from my little girl!"

Her husband wings around a doorway, looking as if he's half-ready to go get the shotgun.

"AAAAAAH crap, this better be the wrong house." Eddie says to himself as he gets ready to duck and cover. Demon or not, baseball bats and shotgun blasts still hurt

"Wait, that's your friend, but--"

His parents visibly calm.

"Milagro, why did you scream and scare us like that? Jaime told you his friend was coming and that he looked a little different, didn't he?"

Milagro, now crying, shook her head against her mother.

Eddie's a little shaken, but recovers after a few good gasps.

"Hot Damn, guess I got the right house. Uh, sorry about the scare."

"It's not your fault, son. Just a little family communication problem. Come in, come in," Jaime's dad says, bustling away to lock the shotgun up again. "We're so sorry about this. This is a pretty good neighborhood, but...well. This city sometimes. The way it is, you're a little paranoid."

His garage is only a few blocks away, and that was where those men came from for Luis.

There's a reason he has that limp.

Bianca puts the bat away.

"Milagro, stop crying. I know you were scared, but Eddie here is your brother's friend. He's another superhero. That's why he looks different. Why don't you say hello?"

"Milagro, honey, look at me," says Bianca, kneeling down and looking at her daughter in the eyes, wiping her tears away. "Remember how this happened before? That you were scared of your brother when he first got home and you saw the suit? You got used to it, didn't you? Because you knew even though it was scary, that it was still your brother inside. Well, some of Jaime's friends, because they're superheroes, they're the same way," Bianca explains ( ... )
