Brave and the Bold: On the House

Sep 25, 2011 16:03

A sleepy suburb in Gotham

The house was old, very old. Anyone could tell you that just by looking at it. Paint was flaking off of the front door, the windows were nearly opaque from a thick build-up of dust and the yard was overgrown and filled with years of accumulated detritus.

None of the neighbours were able to say who had previously lived in ( Read more... )

"This is the place?" Dove asks, looking at the older house. "Are you sure?"

Holly eyed the place and looked back at Don. "Didn' I play this game once? Skinless dogs and freakin' zombies?" Oh yeah, all they were missing was a soundtrack.

Don frowns, looking the place over. It does feel... out of balance, somehow, between chaos and order. But he can't put his finger on what it is.

"Well... what do you think? Knock on the front door, or sneak in the back?"

"Always been one fer the direct approach m'self." Hard to say what was waiting for them inside but somehow she got the feeling sneaking around was not the best option. Looked like it was Scooby Doo time. "Willing ta lissen ta suggestions though."

"I'm willing to go with your instinct on this one," Don nods, heading for the front door... and he knocks.

The knock on the front door cause a number of flakes of paint to fall from the door. Slowly the flecks begin to rearrange into the word Leave.

Dove regards this a long moment, then asks the door, "Why? What's wrong?"

The flecks begin to move again, like a swarm of ants.

"Huh, bored ghosts?" She laughed. "Always thought it was spelled e-n-n-u-i." She shrugged with a smirk, fearless or stupid. Either way it didn't stop her from turning the knob to force the door open.

The knob offers up a some resistance but eventually gives way to Hawk's grasp and swings open. As the pair enter the house the door slams firmly behind them leaving them alone in the gloom. As their eyes adjust they can see messages scattered all about, seemingly created with whatever was to hand. All of them were variations on the same theme. The house clearly doesn't want them there...

"I don't understand," Dove calls out to the house. "We can help you."

The messages reform into a series of question marks. The house is obviously surprised someone is actually trying to converse with it. The dust on the table near Dove begins to coalesce. This time it take much longer for the message to appear almost like the house is having to concentrate or expend more effort to deliver something more complex.

You need to go now!

Too late

The writing trails off even as it is written and then slowly fades away. From behind the intrepid duo comes what seems to be a faint moaning noise and as the turn to look the see the door through which they entered seem to fade away into the wall until it looked like it had never existed.

A new noise filled the musty air. It started off as a faint scratching sound but soon resolved into the tap tap tap of a multitude of small, and not so small, feet.

From behind the remaining doors and out from behind various pieces of furniture and decor begin to swarm with a multitude of strange arachnoidesque creatures. The creatures varied in size and appearance, some resembled true spiders in their dimensions or visage while other were far more unnatural in their seeming or size. The larger creatures seemed to be partially comprised or wallpaper or pieces of a suite and other bizarre combinations of spider and bits of house and the two which were currently present were easily the height of a small person.

"Okay, it looks like we've got a problem... and I suspect a little citronella won't exactly work here..."

Dove turns, looking for an exit... and at least spots one doorway where they're still crawling out of the walls. "They're thinner that way! Come on!"

Dodging between the spider-like beings, he makes his way for the exit to the room, if not the house.

Holly doesn't really see a need to flee, as far as she's concerned they've taken down bigger and badder than this. Well not she and Don exactly but Hawk and Dove surely.

"I don' know about citronella, but I bet the fire would work." Old wallpaper, old things...tended to be flammable and she did not take kindly to threats.
