Calm and Dark

Pieter Cross looked at the poor souls who filed into the church. When winter came, more and more of the city's homeless and drug-addled populace came to the church, if only for the fact that there was a warm meal and some beds in the make shift shelter that was set up.

And the Midnight Doctor, Pieter Cross, was there to bring medical supplies as he did some check ups on the few homeless souls that wouldn't come to his clinic, but would come here.

The little girl winced as he applied the antiseptic to her cut. So young, and already living on the streets. This recession has hid Portsmouth hard and Dr. Cross was trying his damnedest to help the citizens who had been hurt by it.

"There you go. All better. And, since you were good," he says, with the standard doctor line, "I have a sweet for you." A small red lollipop came out of his coat pocket and was handed to the little one. She squealed with delight as she ran back to her mother. A smile crossed Pieter's face. Sadly, the good feelings would not last long.
