Always On My Mind

Megan liked hanging out with Maxine for a lot of reasons. Megan liked her because she liked Disney movies, because she taught Megan what roller blades were, because she was funny and a good cook. She would even tolerate watching an episode or five of Blue's Clues because it made Megan happy. Most of all Megan liked Maxine because Maxine was easy to talk to.

Things that caused her stress or worry - school, hero stuff, living with the other South Titans - it all just poured out of her mouth simple as anything around Maxine. The other girl seemed to offer this unspoken invitation to all of Megan's insecurities and confessions of inadequacy or misunderstanding.

But there were still a handful of things, very personal ones, that Megan played close to her chest out of instinct. Any disruption of her normal mental processes was one of those things.

Mental illness was a death knell to a race of telepaths and mind readers. Not understanding your own mind, hallucinations, uncontrolled thoughts - those were the kind of symptoms that made mates turn on each other, made parents either shelter or murder their children to keep them from harm.

She wants to talk about the visions she's had in her sleep, human literature says they are 'dreams', but she can't seem to force the words past her mouth. Megan wanted to talk, but instead they are shopping, and now perched on some chairs in an ice-cream shop in an enormous mall and she smiles warmly as she eats her fudge ripple, forcing happiness from every pore and rethinking mentioned the 'dreams' at all.

Why ruin such a nice day with her good friend after all?
