Logic?

God he's an idiot and he's the first one to acknowledge it. If dictionaries used pictures to define things, he'd be the picture of idiot. He gets it. But something Rita said keeps rolling over and over in his mind. "If you want it to be the same forever, Jethro, do nothing and let her come to you. If you want anything to change, fucking change it ( Read more... )

A few minutes after Gibbs arrives, the silver Audi pulls into the driveway. Charles and Daniel are out for ice cream, so it's just Heather and James. She moves around to the back passenger seat and she doesn't even see Gibbs' car parked across the street. She opens the door and frees James from his car seat, talking to him about what he wants for lunch. She's happy to distract herself with her family and the life she made, even if it's just settling. But it's not as bad as it could be.

He freezes for a moment when he sees her, all of his determination and the words he's been rehearsing for the last day flying out of his head. Heather and James, together. And it's a perfect little moment and he wants to save her the emotional meltdown he knows he's providing. But the part of him that did get on a plane to do this gets him moving. They won't move forward without an emotional meltdown.

Slowly, he gets out of the car and crosses the street, trying to keep his demeanor calm despite the nerves. Worried he'll lose her if she gets all the way into the house, he calls her name softly.

She's almost not sure she heard it, but it was definitely his voice and it definitely called her name. As she hefts James onto her hip, she turns slowly to face him and her breath catches in her throat for a moment. He's the last man she expected to see today. She stops moving and he comes closer and James starts squirming to be put down. She gives in and puts the boy down. Trying to keep him from running to Jethro, she holds onto his shoulders, but eventually the kid breaks free and bolts forward.

Instinct has him dropping to a knee to catch James as he runs over. "Careful, Kiddo." He ruffles the boy's hair. "Gotta watch out around you." He wants to crush his son close, but if he does his resolve to not beg will completely fade away. He's here to change direction, not to make himself (or her) into an idiot. There are some toys in the yard and he takes advantage of it. "Hey, can you do me a favor and go play over there while I talk to your mom?" He looks up at Heather as he speaks, seeing the fear in her eyes. If Charles shows up, everything will go to hell. If a neighbor says anything, her life will never be the same. He understands her fear. He lives it. He could still be shipped off to France if Jenny changes her mind or worse, be sent to a sub that won't be back for months. But he has to say something and if she still reads his mind like she always has, she knows he doesn't come with any intentions but to talk.
