It's actually kind of funny ...

Jan 05, 2012 19:30

He leaves the office right at 4:30. After his twenty hour Wednesday he can get away with an eight hour Thursday and this is an appointment that he actually can't miss. As much as he'd like to. Anyone with half an eye can tell that James is his son and Daniel is not. But he is willing to play along in the legal games that come about in custody battles and divorce. He wants to make things as easy as possible on Heather and the boys.

The lab is open until 5:30 and he gets there with barely any time to spare, but he slides in and sits in the uncomfortable chairs waiting for some poor tech to come along, call his name, take his information, and swab his cheek so that his DNA can be tested against that of the boys. He knows that Heather brought James down earlier and wishes they could have coordinated schedules. But he waits longer in the tight, hard chairs than he does to get the swab done and is out the door and back in his driveway by 6:00.

He kills the engine and sits for a minute and starts to chuckle. The absurdity of his life amid all the changes they're in the middle of strikes him as funny. He's working to take down a terrorist cell, he and Heather are now facing the legal battles of divorce while taking on their life together - finally, and his boss is ready to transfer his ass to anywhere that he can't be found. And in the middle of all of that, he had to go give a DNA swab today.

It's actually funny. And he ambles from the truck, still laughing, and heads into the house.
