We had decided to avoid the OBX nonsense traffic buy tooling up the eastern shore to check things out. John and Kristen were taking care of a few last minute things so we decided to meet up with them on the visitors center on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It was a really hot day but it wasn't too bad as long as we kept moving. I had never been over the Bay Bridge before and didn't know what to expect so I was surprised that there were a couple of tunnels along the way. The visitors center on the bridge was closed so we keep on going until we got to the next visitors center on the eastern shore. While waiting for John and Kristen to catch up, we went in and explored the pamphlet room. There was a nice gentleman that recommended a campground and a place to get good ice cream (yay for Becky!).
On the way up, we decided to stop into Cape Charles for lunch. Stopped at a light at the turn, Meena went to adjust her face shield and turned around surprised as it had popped off of her helmet. She couldn't find the snaps with the helmet on her head so I threw down the kickstand, ran over grabbing her by the helmet, snap, snap, snap, then made it back to my bike by the time the light turned green. That was my action hero moment of the trip.
The service at the coffee shop we went to was terrible but I was really pleased with the yummy crab cake sandwich they made. While everyone was figuring out the bill, I had given my cash and wandered down the street into an antique store. I wasn't really sure why until I came across some old Star Wars books. Old as in written when I was a kid! I got those and we continued north toward Chincoteague.
Once there, we did a quick sweep of the town, found out we couldn't get to the National Park from that direction (accessible only through Maryland) and ended up at Tom's Cove campground. It wasn't great but fine for one night. We took a dip in the pool that lasted of maybe 5 minutes as the water felt like bath water then went to The Crab Shack for dinner. It was really good and the service was fantastic. I wasn't sure who wanted to kidnap our cute waitress more, Meena or myself!
We stopped for ice cream on the way back but the line was really long so John, Kristen and myself decided to go to the store for drinks for everyone and head back to camp. On the way, Kristen's dress got away from her and, being in the rear, I got about a 3/4 moon. We all got a laugh out of that and headed to camp.
The bugs at the camp were really bad. Everyone limited themselves to pretty much just one drink and retreated to the tents to rest up for our ride back to VA Beach in the morning.
Per request! Can we call this a glory basket?
