It's struck me that many of my friends are graduating, grumpy, or otherwise ravenous for new work. So as to be efficient and helpful and that kind of thing, I thought I'd make a brief mention of where I push butans to receive my bacon.
RM (formerly Research Machines) are an international educational IT company; they're most firmly settled in the UK (where they are the market leaders) but they have a foothold in America, Asia and Oceania too. They produce and sell computers, peripherals and software to schools and universities.
This is the foundation of what makes them great employers - schools don't open or close very often, and they will always need new IT. As the market is so static, reputation and Doing It Right is everything. As they're dealing with educational establishments, corporate pseudoculture can never really get a foothold. They're also exemplary in terms of personal development, don't expect you to clock hours of unpaid overtime, and are generally the perfect blend of public-sector humanity and private-sector professionalism.
If you are IT-savvy, a good people person, and can get your teeth into complex systems easily, check the
careers site, have a look at the
graduate scheme (always open) and check out the
current opportunities. Temporary roles are handled by Champion Recruitment in Oxford and Abingdon; I'm on good terms with their consultant, and can recommend you directly.
Black Mesa's prestigious sofa bed remains open to wonderful people that would like to come down to Oxford and try their hand at our job market.
