Summary: AU. Prince Changmin meets a Dragon of Frost.
In days of yore, the God of Rain was served by a blue dragon who breathed frost. His name was Yunho and he was the second eldest of five elemental dragons, although his long and sinuous appearance made him seem larger and older than the rest. He was obedient to a fault, and when the great God decided to punish the wicked people of Urhu, Yunho listened and descended from the clouds to freeze the rivers and the lakes of the kingdom below. He slipped his way over the battlements of a castle to lay siege on Prince Changmin’s favorite lily pond, when the prince called to him from a lavish pavilion that sat by the water’s edge:
“Great Dragon, why have you come?”
“To ice your waters,” Yunho replied.
Changmin frowned and spread his hands across the pond. “But why? What have the lilies done to incite your anger? They only blossom and wilt, sharing their fragrance with us for a short while. Have you not smelled their aroma? It is the most pleasing in all the world.”
At this, Yunho cocked his horned head, for he had never dallied about the mortal realm, intent as he was, to carry out his Master’s orders expediently. But the prince’s boast, of the fair perfume, excited him.
“You must at least inhale their scent before you destroy them.”
The prince broke off a bloom from the water and held it towards the dragon.
Yunho glided carefully until his grand head fit beneath the covered pavilion’s awning when Changmin sprung, lassoing a sacred charm around one of the beast’s horns. Yunho writhed and bellowed, trying vainly to fling off the charm as fire ignited in his veins. But it was useless; the amulet was a gift to Changmin from the God of the Sun, his great-great-grandfather, and held fast. Foul smoke poured from Yunho’s skin, his beautiful blue scales cracked like heated glass, and his shape dwindled into that of a dark-complexioned young man. Yunho shook and wept. Taking pity on the nude, kneeling man, Changmin shed his royal robe and placed it upon the former dragon’s shoulders.
From then on, Urhu had no winter.
