dbsk_flashfic Fic Exchange!

Oct 22, 2011 01:06

There was some interest in the fic exchange idea, so I'm going to give it a try this year!

Format: A combination of fic exchange and open challenge. For the stories they want to receive, participants will specify the characters (up to three) they want, five prompts from this community (any tag that begins with c:) that they'd like to see, and three optional details. For what they can write, participants will specify the characters (at least two) they're willing to write.

After sign-ups, participants receive their assignments. Assignments are secret! Don't reveal your assignment or who your recipient is until the fic is posted (in early January): you don't want to spoil the surprise!^^

The minimum word count will be 300 words, which can be flashfic or any combination of drabble (100 words), double-drabble (200 words), and drabble-and-half (150 words). 300 words is the minimum; the fic can be longer than that! ^___^

Question: How can I write 300 words if a drabble is only 100 words?
Answer: Write 3 drabbles! They can be related (matching the same prompt in your assignment) or unrelated (matching different prompts in your assignment).

The format of the fic doesn't have to match the original prompt challenge. What this means: if the original challenge was for flashfic, your fic can be drabbles or flashfic. If the original challenge was for a drabble, your fic can be flashfic or drabbles.

The minimum requirement is to write a 300-word fic for one of the prompts in the assignment and including at least one of the characters requested, but you can write for the other prompts and characters requested. You can combine the prompts in one fic, or write different drabbles or flashfic for the different prompts, or any combination as long as it's at least 300 words. For example, you can write a 100-word drabble for one prompt and a 287-word flashfic for two of the other prompts = 387 words total.

Question: Does the fic have to be holiday-themed?
Answer: No. Some of the prompts are holiday prompts, and if you write to those prompts, then they will be holiday-themed. But if the prompts aren't related to holidays, no, the fic doesn't have to be holiday-themed.

Question: Do I have to write 'ships (pairings, relationships)?
Answer: No. Participants can request relationships in the three optional details available to them, but optional means optional. If you're uncomfortable or unable to write relationship-fic, you don't have to.

What you do have to write is fic for at least one of the prompts requested and that includes at least one of the characters requested. Your assignment will be based on character matches.

Question: I wanted to ask for OT5 fic/I wanted to write OT5 fic. How can I do that if I can only ask for up to three characters?
Answer: I love a good OT5 fic myself! But for this fic exchange, I don't see a good way of building it into the sign-ups without complicating things. You can ask for OT5 as an optional detail, which your writer can consider, but there's no guarantee. You can specify that you're willing to write OT5 *in addition to* listing the characters (at least two) you're willing to write.

There will be a separate sign-up post. I will collect the sign-ups and do the matching, then send out the assignments to participants.

Deadline for sign-ups: 31 October 2011
Assignments will be sent out the following week (1-8 November 2011).

Fic will be due by: 1 January 2012
This is an absolute deadline. No extensions.
How many days from now is that?
Fic postings will happen 6-10 January 2012.

Rules: There aren't many.
1. Don't sign up unless you're willing to participate. This means writing for at least one of the prompts your recipient asks for. Scan the list c: tags. If you don't think you can be inspired by any of these prompts, don't sign up. If you can't write at least 300 words, don't sign up. If you won't be able to write anything for the deadline of 1 January 2012, don't sign up.
2. No crossovers. Don't request them. Don't write them.
3. You have to write fic for at least one of the prompts requested and that includes at least one of the characters requested. The fic must be at least 300 words.
4. The spirit of a fic exchange is gift giving. You're writing a gift for someone and you're receiving a gift in return. Be courteous as both a gift-giver and a gift-recipient.

Defaulting and pinch hits: I really hope it doesn't come to that, but just in case... The sign-up form will ask if you're willing to be a pinch hitter -- a backup writer willing to write for another assignment because a participant failed to complete their assignment.

I take defaulting very, very seriously. See Rule 1 above. "Willing to participate" means you'll do everything you can to complete your assignment by the deadline.

QUESTIONS? Ask them below! Comments are *not* screened, but asking a question won't obligate you to participate. ^__^ Only those who sign up in the Sign-Up Post will be participants.

♥ Thanks and ~smooches~ to Rana and the Nuna Fanworks community for letting me steal some of their fic exchange ideas and rules.
