Maybe there never was before, and never will again be such a moment for fresh changes in the American Government. The Republican party has just won control of the Executive, Legislative, Judicial branches and of the press. (There is no meaningful non-Conservative Fourth Estate. There is nothing but X, Joe Rogan, Fox and Breitbart. While theoretically there is "freedom of speech", in practice, a successful press can only endorse Trump. The strongest dissent is "Umm, we won't endorse anybody, because nobody trusts us anyway, so don't think too hard about it, please don't shut us down President Trump.")
There's going to be a peaceful transfer of power, and there will be no checks or balances or guardrails to slow things down. The president already has immunity for his actions in office, and he can grant himself and his associates further immunity, as desired. There are no standards of decency or practice to get in the way, and there will be no consequences for any actions.
davidd , what do you want to see happen? What will make America great again?
I'll start with some of my fears, so you can respond, but you're invited to reply with the good things that'll happen now with an entirely united country.
The Supreme Court will be further filled with young lying amateur Trump loyalists, not Judges with years of experience and a consistent and just record.
The Federal government will be cleared of expertise. Departments will be decimated without thought of consequences for works in progress. Facts and science will not be used as the basis for upcoming decisions.
The median American lifespan will be lowered as education goes down, and protective measures are made illegal. (Fluoridated water, vaccines, masks, safety standards (deregulation), accessible and affordable healthcare, etc.)
Inflation will rise as tariff wars will raise prices in a regressive way, affecting everybody but the rich. (Did you know that the other countries don't pay the tariffs? It's the American companies doing the importing, and they don't just swallow the loss.)
Russia will take Ukraine, and will be emboldened to go further. Comments about the Ukraine's "allowance running out" make me think Trump is a literal sociopath. No adult should behave like that.
China will take Taiwan.
Israel will finish their work on Hamas without regard to the Palestines.
No other country will trust a promise by an American President that's supposed to last beyond his current term. Unless Trump keeps some American promises, I wouldn't either.
Citizenship will be stripped (denaturalization) from thousands, and families will be ripped apart during mass deportations.
Hillary Clinton, Presidents Obama and Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi, Jack Smith and more will be targeted, harassed with targeted investigations and imprisoned, as a sign to anybody else about the consequences of disagreeing with Trump. It will work. Nobody will speak up again.
The Secret Service will be called off from protecting Democrats. Trump will make stochastic jokes like "I'm not saying it's 'hunting season', but there are some sitting ducks out there right now."
Blue states will not get Federal Emergency funds, merely because they're blue, but Trump will trump up some excuse like "they deserve it because they made it happen".
Union power will be weakened. Corporate interests will always prevail.
America will be reframed as a Christian nation, not a nation of religious freedom.
Superlative rights will be granted to the largest corporations, Super PACs, and the mega rich, as money is speech. Big corporations will get bigger. There will be no competition. The big corporations will be too big to fail. Regular people will not have any voice.
Women won't be able to choose abortion. Doctors won't be able to perform them. Men will say, "your body, my choice".
Efforts and investment in renewable energy will stop.
I'm also really worried about President Trump's mental state. Like as worried as I am about Biden's. Which is a lot. But Biden's out. And Trump's got four years coming. He's already really not well. And there is nobody to call him on it. Anybody who does will be out.
The Presidency will be most transactional. If you're rich like Elon Musk, you'll have sway. If you gift a lot to Trump's holdings, you'll get his ear. If you're seen as strong like Kim Jong-Un, Viktor Orbán or Vladimir Putin, you'll have favor. The welfare of the people won't matter.
If you're Elon Musk, who can shutter any investigations, and award all contracts to his own companies, I guess it's a pretty good upcoming four years. (Yes, technically, there are laws on the book to prohibit some activities, but the laws are meaningless when not enforced, and no one's going to look sideways at one of Trump's buddies.) But I'm not sure about the rest of us.
OK, Mr. D, I really hope you reply, and I hope you try to compose your reply in a way that'd try to reassure Americans who are concerned about President Trump's upcoming reign.
