Changmin remembers. He remembers everything.

-

That day, on the bus, when the heat of the sun failed to dry his tears, a moment - that was bound to be imprinted in his memory forever - took place. He did not know it then, but something about the time that passed in those few fleeting seconds had a hand in mending his heart for good.

It was an unwelcome gesture. A stranger’s hand cradling his was not exactly what he needed. (Or so he thought.) He tugged his hand away, not even acknowledging the slightly older boy beside him who was looking at him intently. Changmin continued to stare outside the window as the bus rolled through the busy streets.

He thought he heard a whisper, and he thought insignificant whispers should be ignored, and so he did. But then it came again with another brush of the hand, Stop crying.

And he grumbled, Stop meddling, pulling his hand away for the second time. Changmin did not need this. He felt weird, being watched as he cried, much more so by a man he did not know. Silently, the stranger remained in the seat beside him, occasionally humming a soft tune when awkwardness seeped in.

-

The minutes continued to drag on and Changmin finally gave in, ready to glare at the person beside him. But as he turned, so did the other, and he was greeted by a warm smile and bright, glimmering eyes.

He was caught off guard.

Even though he tried to remain as stiff and as indifferent as he could, looking into this young man’s eyes gave him a feeling of warmth and sincerity that silently prevented his face muscles to give way to a frown.

He decided against his original plan, huffing as he turned to face the window again instead.

-

Finally, the bus reached his stop.

As Changmin stepped off the vehicle and started walking, he felt another presence behind him. And when he turned to see who it was, he was half- surprised to find that it was the same boy who had held his hand just a few minutes ago. He let out an amused groan as he kept on walking, ignoring the footsteps that were trailing along.

Was he smiling? Changmin wondered as he felt a slight tug on the corner of his lips.

Reaching the front of his house, he turned around with rehearsed words ready to spill out of his mouth. Much to his disappointment, he was met with a retreating back, the boy walking in the opposite direction. Changmin sighed, brows furrowed, wondering if it was all but another joke. He wanted to slap himself for even thinking that this stranger actually cared.

Stupid, he murmured as he angrily stepped inside his home.

Just then, he heard a whistle that made him snap his head back to where he was staring at blankly before. There, facing him, walking backwards down the street, was the same boy that had walked Changmin home, smiling cheekily at him. The boy kept his grin as he moved to raise both his hands to cradle his scream as he shouted, No more crying okay?!

Did he just wink? Changmin thought that maybe he did as he watched him skip, then disappear around the corner. Changmin smiles and the boy’s playful voice continued to ring in his ears, those enchanting eyes and charming smile etched into his brain, the memory unknowingly making its way into his heart, erasing the sorrow, and holding back the tears.

(Changmin remembers everything. And he smiles each time he does. He only wishes that he had a name to remember too, regretful that he never asked.)
