Boys are stupid! Both of them!

The hardest thing is the pace of your posts is 2-3 times longer than the pace of the story itself, and that is falsely magnifying the slowness of their progress. In truth, they've actually come a long way in less than a month. When you remember that, I 'd say their doing pretty OK this early into the trip :)
