"you have no idea"

it's been a common phrase in dialogue for too damn long. i didn't like it when i first heard it, and it has yet to grow on me. it's usually used in very casual conversation: "my parents are soo annoying, you have no idea." rarely do people mean it. because, what would be the point of saying it? the only instance i can see is a frustrated end to a conversation. one in which an idea was attempted to be conveyed, but to no avail. and so, hands tossed in the air, one might exclaim "you have no idea!" and hustle off. a suitable pissed off expression in attempts to push the blame of unsuccessful communication away from oneself. shitty to hear, but so is every other end to an unhappy conversation.

but to use it in regular conversation is pointless. if i have no idea, then why the hell are you telling me? if someone has no idea about whatever it is i'm trying to say, i'm more likely to stop the attempted communication than to tell them they have no idea. more likely than not, they do.

if you think this might be one of those phrases you use frequently, i'd suggest stopping.

it's offensive, over-dramatic, and usually completely inaccurate.

thank god for jimmy buffet. he does know how to lighten my mood.
