I finished The Will of Arthur Flabbington yesterday. This is yet another retro style pixelated traditional adventure about a guy named Jack who hears of his deceased uncle's will, sees he's been left out, and a treasure has been left to his uncle's friends. Now he wants to find it. Totally selfish guy. He's going to summon his dead uncle Arthur Flabbington, but the medium summons a different Arthur by mistake, but now the other Arthur is bound to Jack unwillingly and is forced to go along with Jack on the treasure hunt. Comedy ensues.
Artie (the other Arthur) isn't the most likeable character and he's not easy to listen to. He makes Joey Mallone look polite. Jack is not such an upstanding guy himself. However, I loved the humor in this game, so it makes up for it. You're not really supposed to like these characters. The puzzles were on the trickier side, and it doesn't start out easy and become difficult later on. No, it's tricky from the start. This would not be a game for an adventure game novice. So, I did have to look at the walkthrough a handful of times. There were maybe one or two puzzles that I side-eyed, but if you're used to the out-of-the-box logic of adventure game puzzles, they weren't too bad. Not really any worse than the more difficult games of the 90s. I'm just used to things being more casual these days. The voice acting was mostly competent. I noticed one or two names I think I recognized who did voices for Wadjet Eye.
The best part was being able to possess people. That was always fun, including when a character would be drunk, which made Artie drunk too. You get up to some pretty criminal stuff. What else is new? As for the ending, it was kind of abrupt. The game is relatively short, but I still thought the end was pretty fitting and I enjoyed the scene at the end of the credits too. Overall, I found this game fun. It was a bit challenging, but the humor was the highlight. Here's a screenshot. Since Artie came from the 1900s, his commentary about all the modern things was golden.
Now I've started another retro-style pixel adventure called Verne: The Shape of Fantasy. It's well... a game inspired by the works of Jules Verne obviously. I'm kind of a fan of Jules Verne, so I love the idea. However, there was already a stealth part in the beginning, which didn't amuse me and leaves me a little worried. I think it will be OK though. I think...
Yesterday was also Valentine's Day. Usually we'd have king crab legs for dinner, but these past several years every year we've had a difficult time finding them, and I think I came to the conclusion that it just isn't the season for them. So, this year we opted for something different: lobster tails, and they actually turned out pretty good. It was a decent alternative to crab legs. Unfortunately my mom's been sick, but neither my dad nor I have gotten it (knock on wood), so it must not be very contagious. Anyway, I got the milk chocolate See's hearts from my dad and a big Reese's Heart from my mom, plus a card. There was also a man at the meat shop my mom and I went to who was giving out roses and he gave one to us, so I got that too. :) That's pretty much all we did besides watching some shows.
