I “finished” Attentat 1942. So, I would call this a FMV edutainment game about WWII in Czechoslovakia. You are trying to investigate what happened to your grandfather back then when he was arrested by the gestapo when a Nazi leader was assassinated. Attentat means assassination. Through interviews with people he knew, video clips, and mini-games you gather information to try to discover what happened.
I had mixed feelings about this game. It is a fascinating subject matter and based in fact with actual footage from WWII, and other educational material to read about. I found that captivating, but I felt like it was too easy to miss out on learning crucial information. That is due to the coin system. You earn coins by being successful at the mini-games. They are often in comic book style, and you have to do various things like evade Nazis, choose correct responses when being questioned, and hide incriminating items. These mini-games were often timed. If you mess up too much, you get no coins or sometimes just one. The max you get for each mini-game is two.
The reason these coins are so important is you have to use them if you want to repeat an interview with someone, and this is pretty much required if you want acquire the information you need to progress forward. You can replay the mini-games to get more coins, but once you get the maximum amount of coins, which is only two, you can't get anymore. So, you have to really be careful in choosing your dialog with the interviewees. I wasn't a fan of this coin system at all. I would run out of coins because I had to try to remember which lines of dialog I hadn't gone over yet. You can't speak to them again if you have no coins. I found this gameplay mechanic frustrating, and wish it hadn't been done this way or at least if they wanted to use the coin system, allow for more coins than just two. It's just too easy to miss out on information and not be able to continue.
So, I wound up looking at a walkthrough, so I could choose the correct lines of dialog to move forward. I eventually got to an ending, but it didn't really tell me anything. I didn't learn about all the details about what happened to the grandfather. I could have gone back and continued after the credits, but I just didn't feel like it. I still might not have had enough coins anyway.
So, while the history is very interesting to learn about, the coin system I just really didn't like. Nonetheless, here's a screenshot. This scene is from one of the mini-games. You had to wait until the soldiers weren't around to click to hand out the leaflets.
Now I've been playing yet another FMV game called The Bunker. It is about the last survivor of a nuclear blast. I'll say more on it later.
