Normally I would include personal blog stuff when I've finished a game, but that's not going to happen for a bit so I thought I'd update on a couple holiday things. For the Fourth of July our town's fireworks show was canceled. Didn't really make a difference to us since we never watch it anyway, and fireworks put me into a panic. That didn't stop people from setting off illegal fireworks at home. Those might actually be worse, and there were more than usual. But we did play games. I think Apples to Apples and Picwits. We also had some yummy burgers. Yes, Grammy's been over every week. Is that bad? Probably, but I've gave up on trying to control my parents. She's mostly isolated anyway with the exception of Derek taking her to the bank at times. *sigh* And the rest of us are being as careful as we can and not doing anything stupid. I know there's no such thing as zero risk, but honestly I think depression would kill Grammy first. Talking on the phone just doesn't cut it. She doesn't have a smartphone, so it's not like we could Facetime her. So, that's where we're at. A little irresponsible maybe, but everyone seems to accept that. Anyway, that's all I can really remember about the Fourth of July actually. We've been playing board games a lot.
And yesterday was my birthday. Kind of a milestone year for me being 35. My body seems to be feeling it lately, which is sad to say. But it may be my new mattress I got recently. I thought memory foam would would help, but now I'm concerned it may be making things worse and I might need a firmer mattress. I hate to think this has been a waste of money because it's my first new mattress in over thirty years. Yeah, not a good thing to admit. Sleep has been elusive and painful, and I don't know what to do. It's been getting me down. :(
But I did have a good birthday. While I had to spend it at home, it's not like I had any plans before all this crap started, so that didn't bother me. When Grammy came over we watched my favorite movie: Goonies. I know I watched the movie with Grammy a while back, but she didn't remember. My parents watched part of the time because they were busy cooking dinner. That was to be one of my favorite meals: Italian chicken with breadcrumbs and my dad's mac 'n' cheese. My mom got some pasta noodles only she didn't realize they were gluten free because she has a habit of not reading labels in the store. We had another alternative box with traditional flour based noodles, but they saw too late that there were bugs in it. I even told them to check, but apparently my dad didn't see them the first time. So we were left with the gluten free noodles. Meanwhile my brother showed up towards the end of the movie. Grammy really enjoyed it. Dinner was ready just in time when the movie ended.
I have to admit that it wasn't as perfect as it could have been like I've had in the past, but it was still good. It's just that the crumbs didn't stick too well on the chicken and there wasn't enough cheese on the macaroni. After dinner I opened my presents. I didn't share my list on here, but the first thing I got from my mom was The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter. This book has a lot of positive reviews and hype behind it. Everyone seems to love it so I have to check out. It's an African inspired fantasy with dragons. Say no more. I'll probably read it soon. I just want to finish my current read (Age of Empyre) and then read something short, then I'll probably get to this one. I also got the new Lady Gaga album, Chromatica. I like it. I've actually heard the songs before, but it's very much like a club/dance music album, which I'm OK with. My mom also gave me a little glass square (don't know how else to describe it), with a nice message on it. Grammy gave me the book The Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. It's non-fiction about the murder of Indians in the Osage area. I recently loaned her Grann's other book The Lost City of Z, which I also enjoyed. If I didn't get this new one, I probably would have at some point. And I'll also likely start it fairly soon in my non-fiction slot. I tend to read non-fiction more sporadically though, so it may be a while before I can let her read it. *shrugs* I like his writing style though. It's the kind of non-fiction that actually reads like fiction, so it's easy to get into. She also got me a package of pencils. I already have plenty, but can always use more. Finally, my brother gave $35 in cash, which was nice of him. Cash tends to pile up with me however.
Then we had dessert. My mom got these small easy to make Duncan Hines desserts. One was the yellow cake with chocolate frosting and the other was a brownie. Loved them both, although my mom said the cake isn't as good as it used to be. And that was my birthday. Nice and intimate. It was a good time. Oh, and I almost forgot about the comet. The recent comet they discovered in March (Yeah, really), that's been passing by the earth right now. We think we saw it. Looks like a really bright star low on the horizon. At least we think that's it because what else could it be. Without a telescope though, it's hard to be certain. It's not something that's going to come around for another 6800 years, so this is really your only opportunity.
And that's it. Next time I post will probably be out the next game I finished. Probably pretty soon.
