Ailing Rats

We have a couple of rats that weren't doing too great.

A few days ago, I saw Remy had a wound that looked kind of bad. I'm guessing it was from a fight he had with the others. I told my mom she should give him some of that liquid advil, which she did, but then she decided to try putting peroxide on it. I let her do it, but then I was concerned because I didn't know if the stuff might hurt him. So, later I looked it up on the rat forums, and indeed it seemed like putting peroxide on him may not be such a good idea because it can kill healing flesh, and may in fact do more harm than it helps. Last night I checked on Remy and was shocked by a horrible sight. The wound looked much worse than it did before. It was all open, right down to the muscle and even bigger.

Now I was feeling really bad because I know my mom shouldn't have put peroxide on him. This time we took him into the bathroom and cleaned his wound with salt water and put neosporin in it. But I was starting to feel woozy at seeing the severity of the wound. I nearly passed out, so I had to put my head between my knees and my mom put a wet towel on my neck. She said "well you couldn't be a nurse." Usually I'm not that squeamish. I can watch medical shows on TV no problem. I was really shocked about how bad his wound got I guess.

Then we also gave Remy some antibiotics and advil for the pain, and we put a band-aid on it. He really seemed to be in pain, he was breathing heavy and lost weight and wasn't moving much. However we gave him some food and he ate that, and started acting a little more lively. This morning he seems better and he hasn't tried to take the band-aid off, which is good. We have separated him from his buddies though, so they don't try to mess with him. The good thing is, rats can heal pretty fast, so hopefully he will too.

Now, my other rat Perry is really showing signs of aging. He has lost some use of his back legs, so it's hard for him to get around. He lost weight and acts all lethargic. It's really hard to see him like this. I know he probably doesn't have much longer to live, but at least he is still eating and drinking water. I've been feeding him walnuts to try to keep his weight up. Jax and Scooter might be stealing some of his food, and he can't really get it back from them himself. Scooter kind of got all fat, lol. Anyway, they're both about the same age as Perry (Scooter's a little younger) but still as energetic as ever.

I have about 100 pages left in Mistborn. I might try to power read it today and finish. It's going to be hard to find a place I can do it without distractions (people occupying the living room and den, ect). There's always my room, but it starts to hurt my back and neck after a while, just reading on my bed. So, I may end up just reading in front of the computer like I usually do.
