My Phone History Part 9

SonyEricsson W580i (+ GPS unit) (2008)

My Experience

I did not get on well with this phone. While it was a welcome return to SonyEricsson it felt like a step backwards from my K750i. The K series and W series were almost competing against each other for your purchase but by offering different features. The W series had slightly better features for music playing, the K series the better camera. There was still no concept of changing music app so you got what was installed.

The keypad on this phone slid out, making the phone more compact. You’d think that this would give the benefit of less “pocket dialing” but it was still possible to unlock the phone and redial using the function keys on the front. At the time I had this phone I also bought a Bluetooth GPS unit. Global positioning was not built into these early mobile phones or at least any that did have GPS were still very expensive. This reasonably priced devices allowed you to get location information and feed it into your tracking and map applications. Map applications of the time still relied on you downloading a map before you went on your journey.

Phone Death

The phone didn’t die, it was just replaced with something better that didn’t have the random pocket dialling issue. Lost and long forgotten.
