"成熟了 明白了 才悟到了命途的奧妙" - 運 (側田)

There are so many dialects in the Chinese language. Some of them are so different from one another that knowing one doesn't mean you would understand the other one. Before we moved, I used to have a next door neighbour who speaks Hoisanese (台山話), and I could never understand what she is saying. Every time she's talking to me, I would just smile and nod my head, but I would have absolutely no idea what she's saying. The same thing happened to me this morning. I saw this old lady on my way back from the gym, and she was trying to ask me something, but I could not understand what she was saying. I think she was speaking Hoisanese. Maybe Hoisanese is my nemesis...

On the other hand, I think my Mandarin skills have not deteriorate. We just had a Tour Director training recently, and for their final tests, the trainees had to do a city tour in their own languages. Two of the trainees are Mandarin speaking, so for their part of the city tour, they did it in Mandarin. I was very surprised that I could understand what they were saying. I'm very happy actually, that means that I can try to watch Taiwanese drama without the subtitles. Ha ha...
