One thing Face Off is missing.

So, the new Syfy series Face Off premiered tonight. In fact, it's on as I type this. For those who don't know, the show is essentially a competition, pitting a dozen special effects make-up artists against each other in a series of appropriate reality-show challenges and other exercises designed to test their creativity and improvisational skills ( Read more... )

A lot of old-school Trek effects/make-ups/etc. doesn't hold up by today's standards, but I always thought they did a bang-up job here.

From the few glimpses I've seen of Star Trek, I always thought they did a really good job. Sure, a lot of stuff today is more detailed and in-depth, but at the same time you can never really forget the classics or how it began. *shrugs*

I'm going to have to agree with you. *nods*

What others might see as "cheesy," I've always regarded as "charming." Given the limitations of time, budget, and FX and make-up technology of the day, what the original Star Trek was able to accomplish - by and large - remains impressive. It's still my favorite of the shows...but I'm weird that way. ;)

Nice icon. *thumbs up*

I'm always amazed by what older movies and shows were able to pull off, honestly. Sometimes I find myself enjoying them more than I enjoy the movies made today. Back then it was more real and hands-on. Today it's just a bunch of computer animation. Not all of it is, and I know that, but still.

I should watch Star Trek. Several people I know have the show. I should ask to borrow it.

I love old movies and TV shows, too. My favorite SF film is still the original The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the DVD era has allowed me to revisit all sorts of old films and television shows I watched all the time as a kid.

I don't know what the hell it is most people watch today, but I love older shows. Hell, when I was a kid Golden Girls was one of my favorite shows. I love older shows.
